How is it? Do they have american fare for kids who are picky eaters? Do they also cook at every table? I figured even if the kids don't eat the Japanese dishes they would still be entertained by the cook. Plus they would experience a part of a different culture.

Hi. They do not have american food such as burger and fries like some other WS restaurants (atleast not when we ate there 1 1/2 yrs. ago). My DS (then age 8) is a picky eater, he did fine there. We brought some ketchup packets as he will eat any meat so long as he has ketchup! I ordered him the kids chicken dinner, he ate some of the noodles, all of the chicken and some of my steak! Our chef was wonderful and had really geared so many of his silly jokes at DS because he was laughing so much (ex. "hey kid, have you ever seen a butter fly?" Then he tossed a chunk of butter in the air  )

Anyway, when DS opened up the ketchup packets the chef acted like he had been stabbed in the heart with his cleaver but winked at us parents. :rotfl:

At the next table over we saw a boy around 12 yo who had brought in a separate meal and was eating it at the table. Can't remember if it was a sandwich or pizza but we we all wondered how that was looked upon? I always encourage my DS to try new things and always tell him we will get a healthy snack after the restaurant if he is not full, that way he doesn't worry about not getting enough to eat but we don't allow him to fill up on dessert if he won't try new food.

The food is very palatable for picky eaters, because essentially, all it is is chicken, beef, shrimp, vegetables grilled. Kids do not have to use any of the sauces provided. Also, if yours do not like onions for instance, tell the chef and he will leave it off their plate.

The entertainment value is great though. My 16 month old had the best time here... it was the only restaurant he was entertained at by the staff... instead of by us. :) I think several of the waitresses fell in love with my son (he is the spitting image of the Gerber baby!) and just kept coming over to coo over him... he enjoyed the flirting!

:p We love this place and so do our kids. the cook was very entertaining and I love the culture as well. We got edimame for an appetizer and they enjoyed eating that. You may want to be sure your child sits on a corner so they are not too close to the cooktop. VERY HOT

My kids loved this place. They were 2 & 5 when we were there. My 2 yo wanted eggs so he made her some scrambled eggs. They did have a kids menu too and DS ordered off that. No need to worry about being too close to get burned. I do make them sit back a little further when they make that big fire in the begining. We enjoyed this place. And yes they do cook at every table.

Haven't been to Teppanayki yet, but we go to a local Japanese Steakhouse here all the time. Luckily, our 9 yr old loves shrimp so she gets that, but our 2 yo will eat the chicken soup or they can make chicken w/o the sauces and also a scrambled egg. If your kids like steak have them make a steak w/o the sauces and put some of the sauces on the side so they can try them and then if they don't like it they'll still have the regular meat.

Or if they won't eat any of the meats or anything like that pack a PB & J and a few snacks. We have also done this w/ our 2 yo DD.
