How does park hopper boarding groups working? My understanding anyone anywhere can try for 7 AM. For the 1 PM you have to be in the park at some point that day. So are people coming over at 3 PM and just checking their phones and they just see availability?

You need to have a HS park reservation in order to try at 7 am or 1 pm. At 1 pm, you also need to have checked into the park at some point. You don’t have to be in the park to try for a BG. After 2 pm, guests who have hopped to HS can apparently try for a BG if any are still open. You just try to join the virtual queue and the app will let you know your success or if it’s closed.

I can confirm they opened up BG again in the post-hopper afternoon. Got to HS yesterday and grabbed a boarding pass around 4pm while in line for another ride. Pleasantly surprised to be able to ride it on our first day at the parks!
I’m curious what was your boarding group number? Was it a regular one or a back up and did you end up riding? The reason why I ask is because we got there today at two and Got “back up”boarding group number 151. I’m curious if we’re boarding group we even get called. Is anyone know how backups up groups are running lately- if even?

I got a hopping boarding group yesterday - hopped around 2:15 and got BG 159 which was called at 7:05 PM.

(To note: I had already left the park because I was just too tired...but still go the push notification and would have had an hour to get back.)

170-something. Got on pretty late in the day. We picked up BG 88 this morning at 7am and didn't get on until 5:30-6:00pm so it seems the ride was on the struggle bus a bit today. I think it varies based on the ride itself.

So I just wanted to add for those collecting stats on this- We hopped over to HS today and they let us tap in at 1:56 PM. There was only handful of people Tapping in at this time. But I was still paranoid so I had my phone all ready to go and I told my DD let me go first so I could get my finger ready and as soon as she entered I started trying to get a boarding pass. There was about a 15 second delay before the cloud realized we were in the park. At 2 PM we got back up boarding group 151 like I mentioned above. I asked the guy and basically realized if we get a boarding it will be at the very end of the evening so we went back to the resort to chill.

in the end we were monitoring my phone between 8 and 9 PM watching the count up hoping that we would make it by 9 PM. At 8:56 I believe our number was called. I believe it reached 153. We were off the ride just before 10.
I think it’s cool how they let people board the line right until the very end. But it was very nerve-racking not knowing until the last second if we were to get on or not. Watching the clock tick by and the boarding numbers not moving so fast. Tons of mental math there

The ride was awesome. I’m not Star Wars super Uber fan,I could see if one was there might be tears while experiencing this. There were a few moments where I was like wow. I’m so glad I have avoided Spoilers and was able to enjoy it without knowing what was coming

Thanks for the thread and post #1 is great. I have a day one strategy that I think should be okay but would appreciate any validation. Our trip isn't until late spring of '22 and at the moment, all parks remain available for reservation so we're working out our plan well in advance. I also know that Genie may bring some new opportunities but for the moment, we're just going to plan under the current rules. We will have a week to try to get on RoTR but we have some Galaxy's Edge first timers with us so I'm prioritizing it.

We travel/fly to Disney World on a Saturday checking in to our resort on property that day. We have tickets that begin that day. We should arrive at the world and could be at HS by about noon. My thought was to make a park reservation for HS that day so that we could try for a boarding group at 7am before we even board our flight. Here are my assumptions and known risks:

- I assume we can try for the boarding group from anywhere (even home) and that since it's day one of our trip and resort stay and we will have a park reservation and tickets we should be eligible
- I recognize one risk is that our boarding group might be low enough that we miss it
- I assume that if we don't succeed with the morning try, having the park reservation would allow us to go to HS before 2pm and be there for the 1pm boarding group distribution. If neither works out, we enjoy the park and possibly park hop to another :)

Anything obviously wrong with this strategy? Thanks in advance. Planning is part of the fun

In my opinion you should wait until Sunday for DHS. If you get a BG at 7am that boards before noon and you miss it, you won't be able to try again that day for the 1pm BG. You'd have to wait until the next day. If you want to go to the parks then I'd suggest doing Epcot which has been opening at 11 am. If you get there at noon, you won't miss much.

Of course, as you alluded to, this could all change with the Genie+. They might do away with the BGs when it rolls out. But if things remain as they are, I'd wait to try for a 7 am BG on day where you can be in the park when your BG gets called. It's possible they'd honor a missed BG but I wouldn't count on it and you can't be in more than one BG per day. If you miss the 7am BG then try for the 1pm.

With all that said, RotR is flat out amazing. If you are a Star Wars fan multiply that amazing factor by 1 Billion.

Just got back and wanted to let everyone know that I followed all of the advice and steps on this thread and it worked! Thank you all.

Here is what we did on Tuesday 8/17:

1. All four people in my family woke up at 6:45 am.
2. All closed all apps on our phones and restarted them.
3. All opened up MDE (Kids using my wife's account, me using mine)
4. Scrolled to the AT-AT, hit join, and then backed out to the AT-AT.
5. Huddled around my laptop at 6:58 using time.gov website
6. At 7:00 am hit Join, Join, Join
7. My 15yo daughter got us in BG 27 (11:00 am-ish ride time)
8. My wife, son, and I got the "Create Your Party--Something went wrong" error message

Caveat: My daughter said she hit join, join, join slightly before 7:00 am. (6:59:50-ish)

The teen always wins in this battle! It's why my "go to" advice is to put the best phone in the hands of the teen!

I was “practicing” this morning and was surprised to get through to the “select your group” page repeatedly until just before 7:01. Usually I get through once using world clock and by the time I go back and then hit join again a couple of seconds later it tells me the 7 am BGs are full.

when thinking about return times, is it safe to assume that, on average, the ride processes about 12 groups per hour?

6:59.58 or 59 seems to work.

12 sounds about right. While we were waiting for our BG to be called, it looked like a new group was added about every 5 minutes.

On Tuesday we got a backup boarding group of 151 as a park hopper at 1:50pm. It loaded at 9:00pm. Today it was boarding group 145 with an estimated return time of 6 hours, which would put us at 8:00pm. I’ll take it. I’ll give our DHS up for tomorrow. We’ll have ridden it 3 times this week.

I did the MDE update Tuesday evening. I knew the Disneyland app was already like this because I was checking out how it looks when there are two boarding groups opening at the same time. (FYI: It's tabbed on the second join page and you have to tap the correct park, but I'm pretty sure you can sit on that tabbed page until 7:00 and tap the tab for the park you want to 'refresh' and load the join button.) Basically, this breaks practicing. You can hit the first join button but not the second if you don't have eligible tickets and reservations. It's grayed out. There's no way to know if you're fast enough anymore.

Yeah, doesn't seem to be any way to practice now. After hitting the first join button the second page doesn't allow you to do anything.

I was coming here to report the same thing. Maybe that's a good thing. I'm guessing that all the practicing may interfere with those trying to get boarding passes? I tried practicing this morning and the only thing I could tell is I was able to refresh 3 times, probably around 15-20 second mark that no longer had the join button and 1pm was next available.
