as was my mother-she was very proud of her contributions.

in his 50's my dad self taught himself well enough to pass a mid level very technical civil service exam and upon being hired convinced h/r to let him put double retirement payment in each month (which they matched) so he retired with a full 20 year pension after only 10 years of service.
