Tell us about the longest daily job commute you have ever heard about.

In the San Francisco Bay Area there are a lot of folks who commute upwards of 200 miles each way. Housing prices where their jobs are are just too damn expensive. I've known of techies for Cisco who "plane-pooled" from the central valley to work in a small plane.
Yep! DH knew someone who lived north of SF "over the mountain" in Santa Rosa and worked south of town in Sunnyvale....the commute was 95 miles each way. He worked blocks of days, though, so he'd get a cheap hotel room and stay....come to work, work 2-4 days staying in the hotel, go home for his 2-4 days off.....any combination of 2,3, or 4 days on or off. His home was near his wife's family and she didn't want to move  so he made the awful commute a 2-3 times a week and stayed in hotels many a night.

DH also knew folks that plane-pooled in the SF area.....

Cost of housing out there has a lot to do with it....friends are getting transferred out there and are having heart-attacks with the cost! They're going to have to dump about 1/2 of their possessions to be able to fit in something they can afford out there....and one of them is required to live within 30 minutes of his work, so the long commute isn't an option.....

OMG is it THAT hard to find a postman job in Pennsylvania???

I can understand doing that for BIG bucks, but come on!

I have to commute an hour tomorrow, and I am not happy about it! My regular job is 7 minutes TOPS from my house.

My ex-BF flew from Austin TX to NYC weekly for about 6 months. He was in a play in TX and was producing a play in NYC. Or at least that's his story.

For 8 months I commuted from Boston to Washington DC. Every day. I made very close friends with all the flight crews! Then I got the okay to stay there during the week so I'd fly in on Monday and leave on Friday. For another 6 months.

That was when I was young and stupid. And had far more energy :)

 What, pray tell, did you do for a living? More importantly, how much were you making? ;)

I can't beat any of these commutes, but wanted to share my dad's. For many, many years my dad commuted 2-1/2 to work and then the 2-1/2 hours back each day. He worked in NYC and we lived in NY State, he would leave just before 5am every morning and not get home until 7pm every night, so needless to say we saw very little of him during the week.

WOW! I drive 80 miles each way everyday for my commute and I thought I was crazy!

For a couple of years my uncle used to communte from Dallas to Miami

He was a top pilot for AA and thought he wanted to transfer there ....decided against it but couldn't get back to his base of Dallas for a couple of years...

but he only went to work about 10days a month so it really wasn't too bad...

The longest commute I know of is from Ga to Miami. A friend of mine lived in Washington Ga, would drive to Atlanta (I believe about a 1 hour drive) and catch a flight to Miami. He is a pilot, his home base is Miami so all of his flights originate in Miami.
