Tell me your "knew we were going, didn't know when" kid surprise stories

I'm getting antsy/excited about planning for our Grandpa/Grammy/DGS DL visit in summer 2018.

I'd love to hear how other people surprised their kids when it was a situation where they knew you were going to go, but not when you were going to go.

How did you "break the news" or when did they figure out what was up if you didn't tell them?

We told our then, 8 year old dd, that we were going to Nova Scotia( where I grew up). All was well until we got to customs and the border agent asked where we were going. I told him Anaheim....to which he replied" Where in Anaheim?" Ummm....Disneyland...as quiet as possible so she wouldn't hear...it's a surprise I said. "I don't know why anyone wants to go to Disneyland" he said, and my daughter heard it all. I never wanted to punch somebody so hard in my life. He was just trying to be mean.

I wonder if Disney still does the" I hear your'e coming to Disneyland" character calls. We did that once and it was awesome. We set it up for one week before our trip.

This doesn't actually answer your request, but a surprise none-the-less. Our daughters (middle school) knew we were going on vacation the day before we left. We gave them a packing list and told them to be ready at 9 AM the next day. They had no idea where we were going and tried to figure it out the entire time. We pulled off of 5 at Magic Mountain to get gas and confuse them. They were so frustrated. We went to Hollywood and Universal Studies first (stayed at hotel near there), and while at US, our oldest DD said this is fun, but it sure isn't Disneyland. Little did she know that we were heading to Disneyland that night. Once we got in the car and started heading towards Disneyland, they started guessing Disneyland, and once we got off the freeway, they knew they were right. It was such a fun surprise.
