Tell me what you love about your Washing Machine

Looks like we will be replacing our washing machine very shortly. The one we have has lasted us many years and needs repairs that will cost more than it is worth.

DH wants a HE or front loader but I keep hearing horror stories of the standing water and musty smells these can have and I want to avoid those problems. I would love a large capacity washer that I can put a comforter in but that isn't a must.

DH has been reading reviews of Bosch and Electrolux brands but those seem a bit more than the average Maytag. Are they worth the extra money?

I have a front loader and like it fairly well. To avoid the musty smell, I took one of those giant (3" around) magnets that are made to hold the wreath on metal doors. I placed the magnet on the frame of the washer so it overlaps the door opening. The door can't close all the way, so it doesn't get musty, but the door isn't hanging open either.

My favorite feature is the delay wash. Before I go to bed, I can set it for a 7 hour delay. Then when I wake up, I can put the clothes in the dryer and they haven't been sitting around wet all night.

I pretty much asked this same question a few weeks ago, after our washer died. After MUCH review, MANY questions, 4 trips to Sears alone, not to mention the other stores..... we went with the Maytag Bravos 4.7cf tub washer and Maytag Bravos Steam dryer. We ended up getting both sets for approx $1250 + tax after it was all said and done. I love love love the size of the tub in my washer, and 4.7cf is one of the biggest you can get. (I have to stand on my tip toes to get everything in the bottom, which my very tall hubby thinks is funny! ) Right now the washer I got is on sale for $645 and dryer on sale for $739 (reg price over $1000) and I got an extra 10% off that for Friends & Family night. (They do a 2 week price adjustment period so if you buy from Sears make sure and ask when their next F&F is, or ask if you can get the 10% off due to just missing it. Can't hurt to try)

I used my DFIL front loader in the in-between times of shopping and deciding, and I would not like a front loader myself. At least I did not like his, (they are stacked) and I don't think I would like one where our laundry room is. (space is an issue) So we went with the traditional top loader style, but HE. I haven't had it long enough to comment on reduced water bills, electric bills, etc but I can say the clothes are almost dry when I get them out to put in the dryer. So I can see where my dryer is running so much less because the clothes are almost dry. However, my DSIL has a set of front loaders and LOVES hers, but space is nowhere near an issue for them. Other DSIL has an older set of Maytag front loaders and HATES hers, because of the mold on the rubber gasket and the mildew. She always leaves her door open. She told me when were shopping she would never buy another set like it and wishes she had purchased the top loader style.

Hope this helps!! It was a difficult decision for us. But I knew I wanted HE and I knew I was leaning towards a top loader, so that in and of itself reduced many of the options for us.

Thanks for the responses. Those are great prices on the Maytag set! We will definitely look into those.

DH and I are both pretty tall and I also worried that the front loader would be a pain with bending over to load and unload it even with the risers.

I'll tell you what to stay away from. Fridigaire affinity. I'm not even sure they still make them, but they were on the cheaper end and I now know why. I'd prefer more options, like being able to just do a rinse option vs. doing an entire wash again. Mine do smell and have gotten moldly inside. The machine machine soaps don't seems to work. I do not have the risers, and I love that I don't. I'm able to fold right on top of both the washer and dryer.

Just last week I needed to replace my washer. We went to Home Depot and bought the Maytag 4.7 top loader which is HE. So far I really like it. I can't believe how much room there is and the agitator doesn't take up the whole middle of the tub it is only on the bottom. I was told you could wash a king-sized comforter and I believe it. I can't believe how big it is. It's only been a week but so far I like it. I didn't want a front loader and definitely didn't want to pay the high price for it.

I have a whirlpool top loader. My washer died a few months ago and I do not want a front loader. Too many people I know have had the motherboards go after a few years and it's a costly fix.

I have this model WTW57ESV

I bought it at the px cheaper than it's listed anywhere else, it's pretty high on their own website. I like it so far. It's loud, they claim it's noise reduction, no way! The washer is off my living room so maybe that's why I hear it so much but you do get used to it. It doesn't fit my extra plush king size comforter, it does fit full and twins no problem.

The only thing I had to get used to is you put the clothes and detergent in, then close the lid and then start the cycle. Most top loaders you start the cycle, let the water dissolve the detergent and then put the clothes in. This one has a sensor that guesses by the load size how much water you need.

I'm used to it now. I've had it a few months and no problem. I put the clothes in, then the detergent on top. If I do it the other way it doesn't clean as well.
