and how long you've been on it and plan to stay on it.

I started Atkins two years ago and went from a size 10 down to a 4.
The only thing is from eating all that meat I got Diverticulitis, I found that out the following year.
Since then I went on a vegetarian diet which included Organic, wheat everything with lots of beans and fish...you know what a vegeterian eats. No meat or chicken, turkey and nuts(because of the diverticulitis).
I am now a size 12...bigger than I've ever been...so I started the Atkins diet again, this is my 5th day. Except I have to just limit my foods to a Vegetarian Atkins Diet...
Just fish, egg whites, spinich, a little cheese and no sugar.

I had major sugar withdrawals for 3 days, did this happen to anyone else?

So what do you think? I need some positive thinking from my DIS friends that I can modify Akins to fit my needs and be thin again!

Sorry for the long post...I'm glad I found this forum!

I started June 2002 and to date have dropped 30 pounds. I don't eat anymore meat than I did before. I just now don't have the carbs that I use to have with the meat. I try to add more salad and veggies to replace as I need.

Have you ever visited the message boards at www.atkinsfriends.com ? That would be a wonderful place for you to get a wide verse of people to post this question to.

Good Luck!
:D

I've been on Atkins since 1/9 (so has my husband). No diverticulitis at our house yet.

My husband has lost about 30 pounds, his total cholesterol has dropped, HDL has increased, LDL has decreased, triglycerides dropped 98 points in 3 weeks. His blood sugar is under control for the first time in over 15 years.

My husband had withdrawal the first three days. I did not.

My motherinlaw has now started eating the Atkins way and no longer needs to use insulin.

This eating plan has worked for our family. There are several DISers eating the Atkins way.

I did Atkins fr about 7 months and lost 70 pounds. I gained 10 back over the next year. I have lost the 10 and would like to loose the last 12 needed to get to my goal weight. I will tell you that Atkins this time around has been very slow going, and I have been vigilant about what I eat. No caeffine, no diet soda, and I enter everything on www.firday.com/ I exercise everyday and it has taken me 8 weeks to loos the 13.5 pounds I have lost so far.

I think it is a great plan, and recommend it to just about anyone who will listen to me. Good luck, grab a clipart and have fun :)

Wow that's a lot of weight all of you have lost. Last time around I never measured in pounds, just pant size:D
I can already feel my 12's starting to get loose.

I have a question, Glo you mentioned no caffeine. I'm going to stop that tomorrow, I just had to get over the sugar withdrawal first. Is it possible to lose the weight while consuming caffeine?
I'll have to go visit the Atkinsfriends thanks for the link.

How do I get that clipart? Is it O.K. if I join in?

Lynn, I'm so glad you are going to join us on WISH. There is a post telling you how to add the WISH clipart HERE.

I have never given up the caffeine while following the Atkins plan (neither did dh) and I have lost 26 pounds since 1/9/03. Atkins says you should give it up because it can cause you to have cravings. That doesn't happen to me.

Grab you clipart and join our group, we have a very supportive group here, I hope you can visit often.

Yes, I think there are many that do it while still consuming caeffine. I am jusyt really trying to go by the book since I know that I am towards the end and slowing down.

I posted the link to fitdat incorrectly it is www.fitday.com it helps keep everything together, and really is a great motivator.

Well Lynn, I have been on Atkins since Feb. 1st, and so far have lost 30 pounds. I plan to stay on Atkins for the rest of my life, as I am so pleased with not only the weight loss, but how it has impacted my overall health and the energy level that I now have. I have noticed a significant improvement in my blood pressure already, and in a few weeks hope to see a marked improvement in my triglyceride & cholesterol readings when I visit the doctor again.

Glad to have you with us!

:)

I still have some caffeine but not very much. Aspartamene (sp?) can also cause stalls in some people -- but I also use that too. Diet Rite soda is caffeine free and sweetened with splenda -- and it is VERY GOOD!

I suggest that you keep a journal -- and note when you lose the best and when you seem to stall. Then go back and see if the days that you have some caffeine or aspartamene seem to cause stalls for you.

Wow that is a lot of weight in such a short period that you all have lost! Just remember once you start eating sugar and carbs again (if you do) the weight really does come back on and fast. Even though I was eating an Organic Vegetarian diet, I ate mostly pasta and bread and dessert......it was fun while it lasted:D

I can't have any of the artificial sweeteners (they give me a headache) but I do use Stevia. You can get it in the health food store, it's all natural from a shrub. Thought I'd share incase anyone was searching for a sweetener that is allowed on Atkins.
I'm going to go try to figure out this clipart.

That is why diets DON'T work! There is no such thing as a short term fix. You have to come up with a healthy way of eating that you can stick with as a new Way Of Life.:D

Hi Lynn, welcome to WISH.

I've been doing the Atkins plan since 1/2/03 and have lost 22 pounds. The weight loss is great but to me a bigger benifit is the way I feel.

I was suurprised to hear that you can't have meat because of diverticulitis. When my brother had a huge flair up of diverticulitis it was because of seeds. His doctor advised him to skip things like tomatoes, strawberries (because of the little seeds on the outside), any rolls or buns with the little seeds stuck on top, and things like that.

Have you ever tried to add small portions of meat back into your diet and see what happens?

I don't mean to second guess your doctor but it might be worth a try.

If there is one thing I learned over the years is that we're not cookie cutter people even if doctors think we are. Everybody is different and what's good for one may not be good for another. I've really tried to ajust the Atkins diet to what works for me. For one thing I found that peanuts, of any kind, tend to stop all progress in weight loss and cause very uncomfortable pain in my tummy. Am I allergic to peanuts? I don't know, but I know I need to avoid them. Experiment with this diet and see what works for you.

There is a lot of great recipes on www.atkinsfriends.com and you can tweek them to your own tastes. Another thing that has helped me stick to the Atkins diet is the new Advantage bars. They are a meal replacement bar. They use to be kind of yucky but they have improved greatly in the past year. It's handy to carry one in your purse to have just in case that hungry feeling kicks in when your away form home.
I saw you mentioned that you can't use artifical sweeteners. If you haven't tried Splenda you might want to give it a chance. It's made from sugar not some strange chemicals so it may not have the adverse side affects that other diet sweeteners have.

Good luck on Atkins!!

I have been on Atkins since July 2002, and I've lost about 50 pounds. I can tell it's starting to slow down, and I'm having to work harder at it...... but I'll keep at it, cause it's the only plan that has ever worked for me.
I also have trouble with peanuts! I thought it was just me! They definitly slow down the weight loss, and make my tummy feel awful..... so I switched to sunflower kernals. I buy the single serve packs, for only two net carbs! :D

Awhile ago I lost 50 pounds on Atkins, then I was stupid and went back to my old, bad way of eating and gained most of it back, and I felt physically terrible and tired all the time!

I started back on Atkins (for life this time!) last Tuesday, and I've dropped 9 pounds so far and I feel great!

IMHO, Atkins is the safest, healthiest way to lose weight and it's the easiest diet to stick to for life, because you feel so good when you're not getting all those yucky carb-filled foods in your body! I eat lots of fresh veggies, meat, eggs, cheese, nuts, fruit, and just stay away from the starches, processed flours and sugars.

I also had a friend with diverticulitis, and his was caused from eating refined and processed foods. His doctor encouraged him to eat lots of fiber and drink lots of water, to reduce the chances of getting constipated. They didn't mention meat to him either.

Good luck with whatever plan you decide on! We're with you 100%! :) :)

I've been on Atkins since 2/1 and have lost 20lbs so far. I have 56 to go, but plan to continue this way of eating for life. We recently spent the weekend with vegetarian friends....so I've seen a bit of what can be done as a vegetarian on Atkins. I think a vegetarian diet would be fine for lifetime maintenance....but might be incredibly difficult for induction. But you don't have to do induction!

Best wishes to you!

I started exactly 1 year ago this week - I started out weighing 265lbs and wore a size 20 jeans and was looking at size 22's!

I have been "off" Atkins for about 6 months and I am currently at 215lbs and wear a size 16 jeans! :)

I have gone back on the wagon as of earlier this week - I feel better on the plan and have much more energy!

I found that some of the major changes I made really add up - I am a huge coffee drinker - sometimes up to 10 cups a day, I used to put 2.5 teaspoons of sugar per cup - that was a lot at the end of the day. When I started Atkins I gave up sugar in my coffee and switched to half&half in it instead of milk - I never went back.

I think it really makes me think about what I eat - convienience foods kill me.... ugh.....

I lost over a 100 pounds... while drinking 6-8 diet cokes a day so I am not buying the caffiene thing :)
