Just need some suggestions on how to tactfully ask for a complimentary upgrade without sounding too much like "What can I get for free?" We check in at the Dolphin on 12-11-03 and our 3rd wedding anniversary is the 15th. I don't want to sound like I am making up something to get an upgrade, but don't want to whip out my marriage license and insist on one either. I completely understand I will most likely not get anything, but just thought I would try. I have stayed at the Beach Club, Boardwalk and Carribbean beach and have never gotten anything extra. We are staying with the AP rate in a lake view room.

I replied to this thread and accidentally started a new thread with my reply...see the thread called welll....

I haven't ever requested an upgrade, but I would probably approach it this way, since I am not usually comfortable with just asking. Quick note here.. I do not know if you are the husband or the wife. Anyway, go to the check-in counter alone. Explain that your anniversary is coming up and ask for information on how you could order flowers, champagne or a special gift. Maybe they will do something extra special!

I tried the method scanmom mentioned when we went last year. I actually wanted to use starwood points to upgrade to club level. I was very nice at check-in and asked if we could upgrade. They told me that club level was sold out and we couldn't upgrade. The next day we had a slight mix up on our bill. The maid thought we drank the $4.50 bottle of Evian water, and we had just moved it away from the sink. DH went to the front desk to ask for a refund, and he nicely asked if we could upgrade. They said sure, and they added club level access to our room key cards. We used to points to "pay" for the upgrade. My point is that you can always ask again. It's a great hotel, even without any upgrades. Have a great time!

BC - Although you are staying at the Dolphin, this is what I did for the Swan. I emailed the Swan directly from the Swan website as well as having it noted on the SPG website confirmation. Then when I checked in, I inquired about club level and was willing to pay for it with points. They ended up comping me for one night for club level access because it was my birthday. I think because I was willing to use points, I had a better shot. Also, I got an upgraded balcony/water view room most likely because I am SPG gold. Do you have a SPG number? If not, apply on-line and print out the temporary card and then call the Dolphin and have them apply it to your reservation. FYI - I heard that they are trying to do away with club level access (meaning you can use the lounge but stay on a different floor) Good luck and Happy Anniversary.
