OK, can somebody please tell me all about US cellphone usage? What is and isn't possible within the US?

We'll be down at WDW for 3 weeks in september. As mom and I wont be joint at the hip, it would be easy to call and/or text each other during the trip. You know the drill, the good old 'where are you', 'how late is our ADR', 'I'm going to be late' etc. We know we can call from one room to the other for free, but that leaves all communication with one (or both) being outside of the room.

We could use our own (Dutch) cellphones of course. While it wouldn't be exhorbitantly expensive to text eachother, it would be an added expense for both our plans and not too cheap. Also calling would be quite a bit more expensive and knowing my mom she would do better with calling than texting (she kinda needs somebody talking to her to guide her somewhere if need be, instead of just telling her the ride, restaurant or landmark. Doesn't do well with maps ;) ). Can add up in 3 weeks.

When abroad for a bit longer with others, we're used to getting local simcards and use those for calling amongst eachother. Cheapest thing to do and with a quadband, it's a breeze anywhere in the world.

Is it possible to buy a simcard only in the US also, or would we have to get prepaid cells? If the latter, do they automatically come with a certain amount of minutes and/or texts or do you have to add those seperately at a second rate?

And what about providers? Is there any real difference between quality, prices etc. or are they more or less all in the same league?

It is possible to buy sim cards only, from stores such as Best Buy. However, it's a 'pay as you go' in disguise. They come with a certain number of minutes, then you add minutes by purchasing cards.

Here are some common ones to look for here in the states:
O2 Universal SIM card
TracFone with 200 minutes
Virgin Wireless (I believe with zero minutes)

But, there are many, many others.

Service is roughly the same between them all.
