Tell me about your DVC cancellations and winter storms

I'm so worried! I fly down Wednesday night at the tail end of the winter storm that is coming through. I'm worried my flight will be cancelled. What have been your experiences with DVC with regards to not making your first night of the trip due to weather? Will I just lose those points? Will they at least let me check in a day late so I don't lose the whole reservation?

Please send pixie dust. It's a four night surprise trip for just me and my son. I've been going out of my mind with excitement for weeks and weeks. I'll be aggravated if I lose the points, but devastated if I don't get to go at all. Stupid snow!

Call member services if you are delayed to ensure they don't cancel your whole reservation.

May not be an option but could you try and fly out ahead of the storm? I've done that before. The airline was happy to change our flight without penalty. I think it was just five fewer people they'd have to deal with when the storm hit. Stay at valuef or the night or see what dvc has last minute. Good luck. Let us know what happens. Sounds like a lovely trip.

I'm seriously considering flying out Monday night, but that's a long time at Disney and I was hoping to do some work this spring break. I could just say screw it and go. Live a little I suppose.

Just called Disney. Not a single room available anywhere on property for the 13th and 14th. Sigh.

NOTHING open?! YIKES!! Sounds packed.

I will cross my fingers for you to make it out OK on Wed. The worst of the storm should be over by Tues night (of course I don't know where you're flying FROM tho). My DS is on spring break from college and he went home via Amtrak with a friend to Detoit for the first half of the week and he's supposed to fly home into BWI on Wed. afternoon so I am also nervous about residual flight delays into Wed. I'm seeing different forecasts in our local area that are all over the place. My news that I watch said 5-10" while another forecast closer to Baltimore is saying 8-12". So who knows. My son is booked on the next to last flight of the day so I'm hoping he will at a minimum make the last one out should his be cancelled. I don't know how that works?!

Is there such a thing??

Ugh. Sucks. I was going to suggest a couple of nights at Universal and then Uber to Disney but they are booked too. Fingers crossed for you.

If I had a back-up parent with me a longer stay would be no question, but it's just me, and I have a very stubborn son who takes after his very stubborn mom, so I guess it's not the Disney amount that scares me, so much as the extra nights without my husband to swoop in and rescue me from wanting to sell my child. I'm just trying to be realistic with myself.

Hmm... I'll investigate. The universal website showed only hard rock for $774 per night which is waaaay outside my budget for this trip.
I think you'd like Universal for a few days. Great food options, fabulous service, fun pools. If you end up there try Red Oven Pizza. The hotel has a bowling alley.

Nothing at Disney Springs hotels? That would be better than nothing. Did you check Swan and Dolphin on the Marriott site?

There was a room at the Wyndom for $186/night which i considered. No swan or dolphin. Shocking actually.

At any rate. There's no way I can travel early now. My beasty became violently ill on our ride home today, and we are stuck in a hotel four hours from home. Funny how life has a way of putting things in perspective for you. Hoping we are healthy on Wednesday and I don't get this nasty bug too.

Good luck with all this. All three of mine were violently ill with the flu this time last year. I remember it like it was yesterday. Hope he feels better and you get away. Just heard on the weather channel that snow accumulations for this storm are uncertain and could be less than anticipated. Here's hoping.

Sending a little pixie dust your way that your son gets better soon and you make your trip with no problems.

But to answer your question - my best friend had a room booked for her son and his wife in Oct when hurricane Matthew came through and ruined their plans. Flights were cancelled and they couldn't get to Orlando for several days. My friend got on the phone with member services and they cancelled the reservation, gave her all the points back, and let her bank the points even though she was beyond her banking date. So my advise - if something happens and you can't make it or are going to miss days, get on the phone to member services as soon as possible.

if the airlines would let me, I would leave a day early, and take a cab and stay anywhere that first night. a motel 6 in kissimme. eat at ponderosa and go to Old town. checkin very early the next AM at disney. at least you're in florida!

Disney was very accommodating with us and our points with the hurricane in October. Member services helped us bank points we thought we would loose due to shortening our trip.

If you're going from the actual universal site, don't. Go to loewshotels dot com for more info. And to the other online tas like the one suggested.

In case leaving early is still an option.

UPDATE: It's Wednesday morning. My flight is currently on time for 7pm out of an airport an hour away from my house. My boy is still sick. But probably worst of all, our road isn't plowed and we can't get out of our drive way!!!!! It's all in the plow's hands now and we are a small new neighborhood, not on the top of their priority list. Yesterday we saw a plow once, at 6:00pm, this does not look good.

Please send the dust!!!! (Pixie only please, we have plenty of regular dust)
