Saturday is supposed to be gorgeous. But... there's a marathon going on, so they have signs going into the city now to take public transportation that day. Depending on where you are coming from, there may be street closures. Looks like coming from the south - 14th street bridge - may be the best option.
Decided we are going to drive in on Saturday to the Natural History Museum. Will that be enough for the day or should I plan one more thing (besides eating lunch)? I figure we will get there for the 10am opening. And is there a good place to eat right outside the Museum or is the Museum food decent (or crappy like the Baltimore Aquarium and Science Center...yuck!)?
I second the Native American Museum food court. Pricey but well worth it for the taste and variety. The Air and Space Museum has a McD's and Natural History has an okay food court.
The national gallery of art has a fabulous cafeteria ( not cheap but nothing in dc is) and great gift shop. It is on the national mall across from air and space.
Best way to get to White House from Amtrak station - get on the metro at union station (train will drop you there) and take the train to metro center and walk the rest of the way. There might be a closer metro site = go to metroopensdoors.com and check
Thanks, danygirl. Yes, the fares are a bit high. We're trying to decide between the faresaver which is non-refundable, and the value using AAA discount which is refundable. Decisions, decisions.
