Tell me about the PCs in the rooms at CR

Can anyone tell me about the computers that are in the rooms at the Contemporary? We'll be staying in a tower room. Are they in all of the rooms?

What all can you do on them?

Do they have a USB port that I could use to pull pics off my camera and upload them to an online hosting site (and thus avoid having to take my laptop to empty off my memory cards each night)?

Thanks for any info! :flower:

EDIT: I found this blurb on here:
Update - Online Concierge Test Program - Disney's Contemporary Resort is the first to introduce Disney's "Online Concierge." In room computer access allows guests to check flights, contact valet/bell services, play video games, order room service and connect to Disney internet sites. Email updates will include weather info and overview of day's events

So, you can check your flight online, but can you print your boarding passes?

We had a 'puter in our CR MK view room this last April.
I don't recall there being a printer. And we really were not on the computer that much,
Your best bet may be to call CR and ask what is available. :confused3

Here is a snap of the computer area we had:

It almost seems like there was something about printing and guests could pick it up at the front desk or something. But really don't recall.

I really don't know. I was on it maybe half an hour just to check it out.

Yes, there are two usb ports on the bottom right side of the monitor. One is used for the keyboard or mouse, the other is available. We used it to charge our IPod. I'm not sure if you could upload pics or not.

If you go to page 194 of the CR FAQ thread, there's some pictures I posted of the usb port last month :)

The computers are in every room in the Tower and South Garden Wing and internet use on there has been free since they were installed. In August 2006 a Cast Member said they would eventually charge for using the internet on those computers, however who knows when and if that turns out to be true.

One more question:

Does anyone know if they have sound?

I want to be able to listen to the DIS Unplugged Podcast while I'm there, since they'll have just had the first meet and I want to know what all went on so I know what to expect when I go to the second one  :thumbsup2

is there an in-house "Geek Squad" for when/if the computer messes up?

for example, if the previous guest in your room wasn't computer literate?

And yes, Disney supplies a phone number you can call for help. I had to use it when at the WL last year. They were very nice and promptly solved my issue.

I also asked on this same thread about uploading to a website so I wouldn't have to cart along my laptop but no one has responded yet. I have since decided to bring it anyway because I never want to risk NOT having at least one backup (or even 2!) of my pictures.

I just thought I'd give an update.

We're at the CR now and I'm posting this from the pc in our room.

It's pretty nice! The keyboard and mouse are a combo - it's a touchpad mouse. Reminds me of a laptop.

You can surf the internet. There are some cool options for resort services: you can request towels, bedrails, etc from Mousekeeping; there's an option for ordering in-room dining, but that doesn't appear to be functioning right now. You'll get messages from CMs. This morning, I had one reminding us of what all we could do with our park tickets.

It's pretty cool!:thumbsup2

I would NOT rely on this computer for uploading pictures. Disney has blocked A LOT of sites. You can't access youtube, msn.com, photobucket, and a lot of other sites. If you need to pull pictures off of your camera I would either bring a laptop (mine fit nicely in the room safe, it's a 17" macbook), or use the kodak kiosks to make photo cds.

The computer was handy for a few things, like checking my photopass pictures and general disney surfing. But with all the blocked sites (which I totally understand), I would just assume use my own laptop.

:D

Hope that helps.

Definitely did! Can't believe we'll finally actually be there in a room in less than a week!

Enjoy your trip! :santa:

You are correct that WDW did block such sites as Youtube because I tried it and another was Wikipedia. Although if they did block MSN how come I was able to long onto my Hotmail? Now I typed in Hotmail.com so maybe that's why it worked, but since it's still apart of MSN why did it work?

You are right, hotmail.com worked, but msn.com did not. I am fairly sure that if you want to check a news website, they probably want people to go to abc.com ;)

I didn't spend a ton of time on the computer, but it was handy to have.

The first time we turned it on it wouldn't boot. It had 'Can not locate NTLDR', which is frustrating because I know how to fix that... but didn't have the means to repair it! lol Anyway, I called the tech support line and within 10 minutes we had a tech there to re-image out the computer (which takes about 20 minutes or so). Then it worked just fine. Great service too!

Maybe it's because I registered my Hotmail threw MSN.CA, the Canadian version of MSN that page worked for me and here is how I know that. Once I checked my Hotmail I would always click the log out button and it would re-direct me to MSN.CA, which worked. Besides if WDW wanted wanted guests to check news from ABC.COM, why not block other sites like Yahoo which is one that worked.

I know, I said that very tongue in cheek. :p

maybe that is how you got there. All I know is that I typed in MSN.com and got a message saying that site was blocked.

Either way, it's handy to have a pc right there. :D
