Tell me about the first week of January

I'm thinking of booking a trip for the first week of January, specifically 1/1-1/8. I'm wondering what to expect crowd wise. Surely, they'll be lower than the week following Christmas?

I've been the week leading up to Christmas, and a few days following Christmas. We didn't mind the week prior to Christmas, but saw a real change on the 26th.

What do you think? I'm limited with my son heading off to college this month, and want him to vacation with us!

With the way the holidays fall this year, and the way a lot of school districts chose to schedule their breaks, some sources are expecting the heavier crowds to last quite a bit longer this year. Ordinarily, the crowds drop off considerably by the 2nd or 3rd, but perhaps not this year...

That's the week of the Disney Marathon. I think that affects crowds a bit.

We are going to be at WDW 2 Jan 2017 thru 9 Jan 2017 for my wife to complete the Dopey Challenge. We are bracing ourselves for slightly larger crowds than the previous time we were there in Jan (2011). The crowd calendars I have looked at so far are showing normal crowds for that week though. It is still a fair distance out so we won't know until we get there. :)

Thanks everyone. We're experienced, so I think if we stick with touring early, and taking a break, we should be in good shape. Plus I'll convince myself of anything for a trip to Disney!

I've heard lots of rumors of possibly lighter crowds in general with attendance being down for Canadians, Brits, etc., but I don't know if that is true or if that rumored trend will continue.
