I am considering OKW for a trip in Nov...what do you love/hate about it? How are the restaurants? It's listed as having a beach...is this a real beach? Any concern about gators?
Are the rooms run down, or have they been refurbished recently. We own at Kidani, just stayed there, so thinking OKW would be nice for a change of scenery. How are the busses? If we were to stay there..is there a preferable section?
Thanks in advance...

OKW is a terrible resort, the rooms are run down, the place is overrun with gators and the bus transportation is horrible. The food at the restaurants is inedible and that golf course it's located on is hideous. The fact that there is boat transportation to Downtown Disney is absolutely worthless. You're better off staying at Kidani where you can see the nearly Publix and motels on US192.

Pay no attention to my home resorts in my signature line.

wow..wish I had known there was a publix so close..I wouldn't have had groceries delivered! All I saw were giraffe, zebra, wildebeast and ostrich...

Hey I was kidding. I love OKW. Haven't stayed yet at Kidani, so I'll reserve judgement. Check out the OKW Lovers thread on these boards for plenty of information and pics.

Just what I was looking for..thanks! (I knew you were kidding)

OKW is going through refurbishment right now. It sounds like a part of the refurbishment is removing the carpet and putting in faux harwood flooring(how fake the wood floor is has been up for debate here on the Dis).

We personally really like OKW. We own at AKV as well so I can tell you there is no comparison between the two. They are completely different resorts with different positives and negatives.

I am considering OKW for a trip in Nov...what do you love/hate about it?

I can't really think of anything I dislike about the resort. I love the laid back Old Florida feel without Mickey-in-Your-Face. It is set in the 1920's Key West of Ernest Hemingway without his cats. I like that you can park up close to your rooms. I like that the rooms are more spacious compared to the other DVC properties so we don't feel like we are tripping over each other. I like the roomy balcony in which you can comfortably sit and enjoy a nice cup of coffee, or breakfast, or a libation, or whatever while enjoying the scenery and mature foliage which enhances your privacy.

How are the restaurants?

There is one TS restaurant, Olivia's Cafe. It does not have an extensive menu which is appropriate for Key West. We have never been disappointed when we eat there. It has become a family tradition to have the first WDW meal of our visit at Olivia's Cafe before we go to the parks, or to our room, if its ready. It's also a nice place for a late meal after returning from the parks. You have to try the Key Lime Pie!

OKW is the first DVC resort, being built before the concept of the food court. It does have Good's Food to Go which has an adequate menu. Many times you can get some of the same items that are available at Olivia's. It is an outdoor venue hence seating will be at the picnic tables/benches around the boat dock and outdoor walkway along Conch Flats. This is whre you can get your refillable mugs.

Next to Goods Food to Go is The Gurgling Suitcase for your libations. I can't say enough about it other than try it you'll like it. If your accommodations are at Turtle Pond there is another quick serve location at the quiet pool called Turtle Shack Poolside Snacks. This is another location to purchase and refill your refillable mug.

It's listed as having a beach...is this a real beach? Any concern about gators?

Yes , there is a beach, but not in the true sense of a sandy swimming beach. There is an area along the water plus the ponds on the golf course. You can catch the DVC boat to go to DTD or just rent a mouse-boat or paddle-boat for recreation. There is a sandy area past the main pool and tennis courts close to the water where they have clam bakes during certain times of the year. Information will be in your "Welcome Home" packet at check-in. Nope, we haven't seen any Gators other than the football fans.

Are the rooms run down, or have they been refurbished recently.

The refurbishment seems to be ongoing, kind of like the painters at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. We have never had any major issues at OKW. The rooms we've had have always been fresh, clean, well-maintained, and well stocked with utensils, towels, etc. I could not tell you if our rooms were recently refurbished or not, that's how clean they've been. This past Christmas the hairdryer didn't work. We called the front desk and it was taken care of immediately.

We own at Kidani, just stayed there, so thinking OKW would be nice for a change of scenery.

As I mentioned earlier OKW has that Old Florida ambiance. It is more reminiscent of a resort from my childhood too many years ago. The other DVC properties, as wonderful as they are, do not have that "resort" feel. They seem more like a hotel in comparison. That is more a product of their design than anything else.

How are the busses?

The buses are probably the same everywhere. If you remember that they come by every 20 minutes beginning an hour before the parks open you can plan when to arrive at the bus stop and minimize your wait.

If we were to stay there..is there a preferable section?

That depends on your preferences. Do you want quick access to the HH or are you content with a location near a quiet pool? We have stayed in each section except Miller's Road. We've never been disappointed. The entire area is easily navigable just by walking. It's about a ten minute walk from the farthest point to the HH.
Thanks in advance...

Your Welcome :goodvibes

You're just saying that to keep everyone away!!!! :rotfl:

We've stayed at OKW for two short stays(we own at BCV). I like the laid back atmosphere and the large villas. I've been disappointed in the upkeep for the units. I noticed a mildewy smell in both the bathrooms. The tile work had quite a bit of damage under the vanity in the master. The patio furniture is detiorating, the interior furniture is stained or showing a lot of wear.

I'm not familiar with that resort. Must be the OKW evil twin we only hear about on these boards.

I stayed there for the first time this past Sept. I like the resort. What I don't like about it is having to stop at multiple stops before heading to the parks or coming back from the parks.I also don't like having to take a bus to get back to the main building.

The rooms are spacious though. The resort is very clean and the boat ride to Downtown is great. One of my favorite things is that it is so quiet and really nice to go for a walk.

I like to stay at OKW when we want to relax more. I love the sand area for the kids. It is more spread out and lots of pretty landscape. We had to walk further to the pool though. I like to rent the boats at OKW. There is more to see than renting them at BWV. I also liked the room layout. They are more like VB.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this. :goodvibes

You are absolutely right! :thumbsup2

Ah but you didn't try hard enough :teeth: we bought resale last May sight unseen, OKW was they only place I would consider.

OKW was our first DVC stay and one of the factors in us deciding to buy. We were in a GV and it was fabulous. HUGE rooms and kitchen, great balcony, and the pool was a blast! Olivia's was awesome as well. Their service and food were excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. :thumbsup2

I'm with La2kw--OKW is yukky;) blech. Run away.

Concerned about the flooring talk on the thread though--I hate laminate (which I have in my house). Hope this is not the floor change.

I miss OKW every day I'm not "home":lovestruc

You left out "old folks home."

Two other drawbacks of OKW not previously mentioned:
  1. I hate the pain from walking outside my villa and smashing my shin on my car bumper. Having to pay for valet parking or pack a lunch to hike to my car would be WAY better.
  2. The whole GPS thing to get from the master BR to the living room in a 2 BR. DW is not good with electronics and has great difficulty with this. Fortunately, DD7.9 helps her ("Oh Mom!")
