We have been to DL a number of times in the summer. These have been short trips, usually part of a long summer roadtrip when school lets out.

This December my husband might be attending a conference in Anaheim the first week of December. I consider myself an expert at December in WDW, having done it a couple times already. But DL in December is new to me. Tell me about:

1) Crowd levels

2) Special events or decorations?

3) The hard ticketed Christmas party?

4) Typical park hours?

5) Weather?

6) What to expect compared to DL in Summer?

7) What to expect compared to WDW in December?

TIA for your info and pictures!

Start here at the DLR Christmastime superthread http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2612827

That thread should answer most of your questions. Has a lot of wonderful pics too! Christmas is a very crowded time at DL in general but I have not been there the first week of December so maybe you could go to the posts on the superthread from your week last year and see what was being said.

DL has not had a hard ticketed Christmas Party like WDW has ...as of yet you never know what could happen.

The week we went last year hours were 8am to 12m but not sure how early in the holiday season they start those hours.

Looks like a great starting point. I'll read through that today!

I'd really like to hear anyone's experience with the first week of December. I know at WDW, the park changes overnight from a manageable moderate crowd level to its peak level of the year. So I'm not interested in hearing about later in the month, but am trying to find out if there's a lower crowd earlier in the month.

I'm assuming that the parks get more local traffic on the weekends, but are the weekdays during early December crazy busy too? Is there a point where it picks up the most?

1) Crowd levels- yes, crowded especially on the weekends, but less crowded then later in the month. You are going at a better time.

2) Special events or decorations? Santa roundup in Big Thunder Ranch area, Haunted Mansion Holiday, Small World Holiday, Fireworks, Parade...

3) The hard ticketed Christmas party? This is a rumor. They have not had one in years past so this is a wait and see- VERY much in rumor stage.

4) Typical park hours? archive of hours last yearr-http://www.wdwinfo.com/disneyland/park-hours.cfm?month=12&year=2009

5) Weather? cool in mornings and at night- depends on what you are used too... Can get rainy.

6) What to expect compared to DL in Summer? Sorry I don't go in summer can't help there- expect you won't get as exhausted by heat in afternoons.

Have fun!

My experience has been that Sun-Thurs immediately after Thanksgiving is wonderfully uncrowded. This year, that would be Nov 27 - Dec 1. But the Candlelight Processional is the first weekend in Dec; presumably that would be Dec 2-3. And it's generally very crowded for that event. So it will go from ghost town to very crowded on Dec 2.

I would think that after CP is over, you'd get middling crowd levels for the next week. But starting the 2nd weekend in Dec, I'd expect the crowd levels to just keep increasing, reaching a crescendo on the dreaded Christmas to New Years week.

We are going Dec 5-9. We were there for Halloween this year. Are the crowds going to be similar. I was hoping that since we are going to be there during weekdays we would miss a lot of the crowds.

Thanks, Sara and Sherri, for promoting the Superthread.:goodvibes We've all put a lot of work into it to provide info for DIS'ers, and it's jam-packed with info (especially where it is concentrated on Page 1). Post #3 has a Q&A that covers often-asked questions, including questions about weather and busy periods (I went in and bolded all the Q's and A's today so they were easier to see).

villain luvr - Halloween has become increasingly popular so the crowds have been heavier for that season in the last 3 years. I think last year was even more crowded than 2009 and 2008. But the first week of December is generally said to be fairly pleasant in terms of crowds. The holiday season is going to be busy no matter how you slice it, but it's at a lower level of 'busy' early in December than later in the month.

Thanks Sherri, I was surprised with the amount of peolpe that we encountered for Halloween. It just seemed like a lot more then we have in the past. I was surprised. I understand that about holidays being busy. I was just hoping it is at the lower end when we go.

Thanks everyone! And I've been sifting through the super thread. What an awesome resource!

I really had thought I'd consider Hallween at DL this year, but since my husband may have to be there in December, that decision might be made for me.

I can't believe how little I know about DL. I just assumed there had been a Christmas party. At WDW you can't see the Christmas parade unless you do the party or arrive after the last party around the 20th.

I have much reading to do! And I'd still love to hear from others who have been there that week. I guess weather (maybe rainy) doesn't scare me as much as it used to. After hitting record heat at WDW in Sept 09, and record cold at WDW this past December, how bad can it be?????? (she asks while looking to the heavens waiting to be struck by lightning..........)

I think what scares me most about DL would be potentially huge crowds. After being there the first week of June last summer, I've seen just how bad THAT can be......

The discussion about Halloween has me wondering...... anyone have a feel for how the crowds at DL at Halloween seem compared to those at WDW? Anyone been to both and can compare? At WDW the parks aren't too bad in October during the day (not low, but not super crowded either. Outside Columbus Day weekend they are manageable) but the closer it gets to Halloween the busier the parties. I'm quite sure the "limited" number of tickets they sell to those parties (Christmas included) grows every year.

What you said about not being able to see the Christmas parade at WDW unless you do the party is something we've tossed around here on the DLR side of town. It's an interesting scenario. I have a strong feeling that a Christmas party at DLR is inevitable - the Halloween party is just too popular for them to not try having a Christmas party. It's just a matter of whether DLR will start a Christmas party this year or wait until next year, when all the work in DCA is done.

But, the Halloween party may be more palatable than a Christmas party is to guests, I think, because the Halloween Screams fireworks had only been available to everyone (general public) for one year - in 2009 - before they became party exclusives in 2010. In other words, it wasn't like Halloween Screams had been running for years and years, available to everyone, and were then suddenly made party exclusives out of the blue. They had only been around one year, so it was easier to 'let them go' to become part of the party, if that makes sense. (But it was still a bit controversial at first!)

Now, if you suddenly have a Christmas party at DLR, then you would need to have certain signature 'events' as party exclusives, just like Halloween Screams at the Halloween party. IF they have a DLR party and make the parade a party exclusive, then that will automatically change the popular holiday tour - which currently features reserved parade seats as one of its perks. They would have to remove the parade from the tour, and that will not go over well with many people.

So, if not the parade, then what would be the signature party event for the holidays? What would become of the holiday fireworks (Believe...In Holiday Magic)? Would those become party exclusives? And the snow on Main Street?

These holiday events have been happening at DLR for years and years, with no separate admission required. They have been available as part of regular admission. I think a lot of people will be up in arms if the things they are used to enjoying for years suddenly becomes party exclusives. It would be one thing if it helped minimize the lines and crowds...but, according to those who attended many of the Halloween parties last year, the crowds were not that light and the lines were not that short. So I'm not sure a ticketed Christmas party would really cut lines way down, either, especially since it's a busy season anyway.:confused3

I suspect there are going to be a lot of changes at DLR over the next couple of years in conjunction with the DCA transformation. I think they are really gearing up for big price increases (more than usual), a restructuring of the Annual Pass system, reorganizing the DLR hotels' reservations/booking policies/system (I am guessing that based on the survey I just did for them in which they were talking about some of the changes they are currently "considering" making to the current room reservations, packages and bookings), bigger and better celebrations of Halloween Time, and probably more stuff for Christmas...like a party. And the Candellight Processional is rumored to be moving to DCA in the future and out of DL, but we don't know that for sure yet. Eventually there will be a World of Color holiday overlay and also a Toy Story Midway Mania holiday overlay.

Anyway, stay tuned to the first page of the Christmas Superthread as that's where I'll be adding in any news we get on this year's season as it comes in. There's already a lot of good stuff on Page 1 right now. And feel free to just jump in over there and ask any questions you have if you don't get your answers elsewhere. There's lots of seasoned DL holiday visitors in that thread, many of whom have gone in early December, I'm sure.

As for the Halloween season crowds at DLR - yes, as you described about WDW, at DLR the way it usually seems to work is that it's extra busy up until Columbus Day, because there are various school breaks and other events that occur in early October that drive up crowds. After Columbus Day, as a rule, it quiets down a bit until, as you said, right before Halloween, when it picks back up again. That's kind of the general pattern, but, as I said to villain luvr above, the Halloween crowds have increased substantially overall in the last few years - especially last year. A random day in October could easily seem like a random day in December, crowd-wise.

October used to be considered "off peak season," but that has definitely changed!

We have a super thread for halloween too.. you want the link?

Sure! That would be great! Thanks for offering. I'm really not used to he superthread thing. Over on the WDW forum, we mostly just answer the same questions over and over! :rotfl2: There's a few "stickies" but nothing like you guys keep up over here.

What you said about not being able to see the Christmas parade at WDW unless you do the party is something we've tossed around here on the DLR side of town. It's an interesting scenario.

Well, that makes complete sense. It definitely will be interesting to see how they go about it if they decide to add a hard ticket event. I had seen photos of the Christmas parade at DL and just always thought it was at a party. You learn something new every day! I can see it might result in mutiny if they take all that away in favor of a party for extra cost.

This is not vastly different from the experience at WDW in recent years. It just grows in popularity. October used to be a fairly low crowd season, but I'm not sure there IS a low crowd season there any more. Same goes for December. Early to mid-December used to be a low crowd time, but not so much any more. Still manageable if you know what you're doing. But the days of walking onto rides mid-day are gone. Everyone over on the WDW forum blames Samantha Brown! :lmao:
