My son is a Senior in high school......good hitter and good pitcher through Little League, and through Freshman and JV high school baseball. Biggest challenge was last year, as a Junior on the Varisty team. Varisity is a whole different world. The team had 19 players, 12 were Seniors...5 were juniors, 1 was a sophomore, and 1 a freshman, the last two real studs.
Basically, Juniors didn't play. It was a real mental adjustment for my son. Hard to be a batting star when you only get 8 at bats over a 33 game season, plus 7 playoff and championship games. On paper, his pitching was flawless....no walks, no hits, no hitter batters struck EVERY batter he faced out....but he only pitched 2 1/3 inngs, faced a total of 7 batters, and threw a total of 12 pitches ...... Spent the entire rest of the season catching bull pen....but did get the Most Inspirational Award.,,,
Anyway, he made the team this year, we have a scrimmage in a few hours, and the first game Monday. But now a whole new world opens up, COLLEGE baseball. He is registered with the NCAA, but legally colleges can't even talk to potential players until after the end of their junior high school year, so they can't scout them until their senior year. He wants to play, even if he is a walk on. He has already been accepted to a Division II school, based on his academics.......we have no clue how he stacks up athletically though. We should have a clue soon, the school hands out scholarships on March 15.
