Teenage Boys and Sweet 16 partys?

My question is 2 parts. What amount is an acceptable monetary gift. I do not buy presents. One girl specifically told my ds, I do Not want jewelry. O.k.

Part 2 - ds had a major hissy fit that I made him take the card with money in a gift bag. He said boys do not take gift bags to partys. I made him. I figure it would be much harder for ehm, another guest to take the whole bag and not just an evelope. If someone was not supervising the presents.


So is it acceptable for a boy to take a party bag to a party? He is not talking to me too much right now. Gee, just over a stupid bag. THe bag is really cute. Says sweet 16 etc. Hello, all he has to do is drop it down once he gets in the door, right?

i dont think its a big deal about the party bag..but everyone here just brings an envolope...what i did was put all my envolopes in a gift bag that someone had given me and put it where no one would see it.....my brother (18) saId he would never take a gift bag...

for my sweet 16--friends usually gave 15-20 dollars

My 16-year-old son would take a gift bag to his gf. He might take one to just another girl turning 16 if it were some cool kind, such as Sponge Bob. Sweet 16 -- nah.

I'm a bad mom. I've been sending my son off with gift bags and he hasn't protested. He's got an older sister so maybe he's more accepting of the froufrou!

I wouldn't send my sons with gift bags, and I certainly wouldn't send $15-$20!!! I think $5-10 is more than enough.

But I am cheap when it comes to the party for this and party for that crowd.

I wouldn't make him take the bag, just tell him to make sure he hands the card off the somebody responsible. Pick you battles.

I can't imagine why you would force him to take a gift bag. You're right, it's not a big deal, so if he wasn't comfortable with it, then you shouldn't have "forced" him. Very disrespectful, if you ask me. I actually think it's kind of silly to put an envelope in a gift bag. It's almost like you're trying to pretend you gave a gift when in fact it's just a card with money. Not that there's anything wrong with giving money. But, it looks like you're trying to give more.

When my sons friends were turning 16 it seemed there was a party every weekend. We bought gifts for the girls who were his "buddies" - and those we put in a gift bag. To all the others, just an envelope, usually with an Easter card, a Mother's day card, anything EXCEPT a Sweet 16 card (he has a weird sense of humor!) and $16. He'll be 20 in a couple of weeks and he's still friends with most of these girls!

thats exactly how it was when i was turning 16..there were parties every single weekend--it got crazy....and 4 years later, im also still friends with most of those friends!

the way your son did the differnet cards made me think of my brother--he does the same thing..on any birthdays, he has been known to give a christmas card,,,,or hes even given me a card for a brother......alwas interesting!!
