Teen girls-- need help on buying a necklace for DD

I am hoping you all won't mind helping me out. DD14 has asked for a necklace for Christmas. She loves necklaces but is allergic to nickel so needs something "real". That is all she has told me "A necklace that I can wear that won't give me a rash"

I have found many nice ones but am not sure what type of pendant is "appropriate" for a 14 year old girl to wear for the next few years. What is cool and what isn't? She is really just a typical teen and I don't want to get her something that the other girls may give her grief over (KWIM?)

There are lots of pretty butterflies with different types of gemstones. But are butterflies too juvenile for high school?

What about hearts? or is that only for a boyfriend kind of gift?

A flower in gemstones?

Just a plain gemstone (seems kind of boring?)

Maybe just her initial?


She already has a cross so I know she wants something different.


Any suggestions?? I don't want to get her something she would be embarrassed wearing.

I would say no initials or butterfly's. I wore both when I was in middle school, and even then only 6th grade. Hearts don't just have to be from bf's. I know a ton of people who got there tiffany "return to" hearts from parents/grandparents ect. Another big thing are keys, I am loving them at the moment and a lot of people have been wearing them.
I know you said you want real, but do you have a particular place you would be looking. I could go on the website and pick out some parent appropriote necklace (something I would like to get from my mom/dad).

My grandfather got me a plain heart necklace when I was 13 for Christmas. I'm now 16 and I haven't taken it off since. It's very dear to me, and something I'll have forever.

American eagle has plenty of pretty necklaces. A lot of them I've seen are the long cluster necklaces. But those are my favorite. I think you're looking for something short, that she can wear all the time.

It's a pearl holder. When we went to Disney this past May, she took us to that pick-a-pearl place in Epcot. And we got to open a clam.. or whatever those things are.. lol.. and see what pearl we got. ANd you just put it in there and lock it. I loved it!

She doesn't want Disney She would LOVE the AE one, but unfortunately she can't have most of the jewelry sold in those kinds of stores-- they are usually not nickel free.

I did find one at the Kohl's site with some musical things on it that she might like.

well, I would say any of those styles would be nice. I may not have the same taste as your daughter or be the same age, but I would wear any of those styles so I think your daughter would like them. A plain gem would be pretty, but perhaps not as fun as a pretty heart. Any of the styles that have been shown or suggested are good, in my opinion.

I'm 13, and I'll be 14 next month, I like heart necklaces, necklaces with my first initial, necklaces that spell out my name, and like that. That's what most girls 13-15 wear around here. At Forever 21, Aeropostale, and Claires they have some really cute necklaces, if you can find some that are nickel free

Yeah I agree with Mickeyisbeast. That's kind of the same around here too. The places Sara mentioned are places that have cute ones. But if you can't find any nickel free ones there,you could look at places like nordstrom or macy's, which usually have a variety of different brands and styles that are cute.

I have a key cluster necklace from Forever 21. I get nothing but compliments on it. I'm like... but it's just a whole bunch of random sized fake keys? lol.

I've noticed that cluster necklaces are in right now. I have several different ones.

My great aunt bought me a silver treble clef necklace for my birthday a couple years ago. It's simple, pretty, and elegant, and I still wear it every day. I love it. If she's into music, you could get her something like that.
I don't know where you could get one because she bought me it from a local store, but I'm sure if you searched around you could find something like it.

^That one's my favorite. I have a Return to Tiffany bracelet and I love it. I agree that Tiffany or another jewelry store like it, like Kay or something would be your best bet.

I love all of them!! BUt i would go with the heart one! becaz if she doesnt decide to stay in band then she may not wear it caz she wont b doing anyhting music related! and the cat one is cute i agree! but she may not want to wear a cat for a necklace!! but thats just my opinion!!
