LL--I was writing to YOU when Bear ate the computer! To make it short---BA broke her arm (but not as bad as Michaels) but now you can't even tell it on an Xray. Kiddos heal really fast!

Rachel---I worked indigent care in TX and saw several lice cases---even the wound care nurses got squeamish! And we disinfected EVERYTHING!

We went to Dairy Queen for some blizzards, and Jon got a mint cookie one. Apparently, some peanut butter cups snuck into his mint blizzard. Even though I specifically told them that he was allergic...as I always do.

I have already called DQ and there is no manager there. They will be getting a visit from me in the morning.

Yes. But, not at home. At the hospital. I didn't realize what was happening at first. I thought it was an asthma attack...gave him his inhaler, and when he didn't get better, we headed to the ER.

As we were on the way, his lips began to swell and he got giant bruisy blotches on his arms and neck and stomach.

They got him right in...and gave him the shot...and he was fine. He has to take some steroids and some benadryl for a few days...but he's absolutely fine.

He's had anaphylactic reactions before...to medications.

the bad news is that we will barely get to see him once he moves as plane tickets to the West Coast are super expensive, talking $800 minimum for basic economy ticket.

I'm happy for him and sad for you.

I think you guys really need to sit down and see what would be best for everyone. Taking care of family is so hard...and if you (or whoever) can't do it...then you need to take those steps to make sure they are taken care of. Falling is so dangerous. If things like this are happening, then it's time to sit down and decide what to do. It's so hard sweetie. I'm so sorry.

So the two of them together would be pretty astronomical, as 10 days costs more than they get from Soc. Sec. They have farmland, so they don't get the extra assistance, as the government sees it as salable assets. Never mind the fact that it's been in the family for more than 100 years... At any rate, I REALLY don't know what they'll do. Even if they sell their house, it wouldn't be a lot - real estate in tiny towns in central IL don't go for much.

Yikes. My mom will continue to care for them, but she's becoming bitter and very tired. I don't think she should be doing it. She feels guilty.

That's right, we're going to Disneyland!

So.......CE-- sorry about your grandparent drama. Sounds like he needs to be in assisted living at least--that is a lot of responsibility to your mom. And they need a life alert alarm too.

Thanks, TE. I'll bring up the life alert thing. I have to admit, my first thought upon hearing the story was, "I've fallen and I can't get up!"

CE- I'm sorry you're having to deal with all of that drama. I hop e can all sit down and come to a decision that's helpful for everyone involved.

I like the Subaru Tribeca, but dh said he doesn't know much about Subaru and is unsure about buying one.

I also like the Saturn Vue and Outlook. I've never been much of a Saturn fan because when I was a claims adjuster, every Saturn I saw - even ones in minor accidents - would have frame damage. I think they make them better now, though. My friend who is still a claims adjuster says he thinks they are made better now, too - from what he's seen in more recent accidents.

I test drove both the Tribeca and a Vue Hybrid a little over a year ago. I LOVED the Tribeca but it was darned expensive. Subarus are all over the Northeast (at least in NH and VT) and people rave about them, for what it's worth.

I liked the Vue, too, but wasn't sure since it didn't have even the tiny 3rd row seating.

Then it turned out that we started paying the MA state income tax, and I was darn glad I didn't have a car payment. I still want to get rid of the van, though.

D has a Saturn sedan and we both really love it. It's 7 years old now and still going strong.

First...isn't it awful how much it costs to get help when you are older? RIDICULOUS!!! I hope that you and your family are able to get things taken care of.

And thanks for the sympathy for Jon. He really is just fine. When we got home...I dug through his blizzard. He had only eaten a little. My father got a butterfinger one...and we have decided that his had a piece of butterfinger in it. I"m glad he's fine...but if I warn you about an allergy...then me thinks you should pay attention.

Jen, I would keep on in the glove compartment at all times. You can give it to him for an Asthma attach too. I have severe asthma and as a child (before I learned to control it better) we need one on many, many occasions.

I would be DEMANDING a full refund for your DQ, reimbursement for your medical bills AND reimbursement for you gas. THis is a serious issue and they need to take it seriously!


I am glad Jon popped back after his trauma today.





CE- I know many people who have put the land/assets in their children's names well before they would need to be in assisted living. Has your mom looked into that? Also, maybe their church or a local community organization would have some volunteers that can help with errands ect. You can also sign them up for meals on wheels. I grew up with my grandfather living with us and it was trying on my"mom" but we learned how to seek out assistance.

...Maybe 45 minutes later, he fell. My grandma is tiny and couldn't get him up.

So mom got another call at the wedding, had to drive 45 minutes home, took him to the ER and so forth.

Then last night my grandparents wanted her to come stay with them, just in case something happened. Well, that's OK - but she can't do it every night.

Why does it always end up being 1 sibling that has to bear the brunt of this kind of responsibility? My gran used to depend on my DDad a lot. It used to really wear him out. She just wouldn't bother his sister who lived right behind her. You have every right to worry about your Mom. I agree with the others - it's time to have a family discussion about it.

Found out today that my grandmother who lives in BC gave my dad a sizable amount of money (advance on his inheritance) and he is now retiring within the year and moving out to BC to live close to her (it killed him not being there for grandpa in his last days) and he always planned to retire out there anyways in the next few years. This is good and bad news for me.

I know you'll miss your Pop, but if this is what he really wants, then you need to support him in his decision. Let him know how much you will miss him.

Nope that is for just one seat. Airfare in Canada is ridiculous, that is why I fly from the States whenever possible. It is because there is no competition up here. There are basically two airlines WestJet and Air Canada. The $800 I quoted is from the "bargain" airline (WestJet).

No major happenings today with DH. It rattled him a bit as this is the first time he has experienced a seizure while he was awake. He is doing fine though. He didn't go to work. However, as I stated above, he did cook for me!! Thanks for all the 'well wishes'.

I paid off my car today!!! Now the only thing we owe on is the house. I intend to keep it that way!!! My dad would have appreciated me using some of the money he left me for something like this.

I have an ING account and I love it. A great way to save money. I think what I like about it most is that it is hard to spend the money on impulse buys as it takes a few days to transfer it back into your regular account so it gives you time to really think about if you want to spend that money or not.

Janet - Yes it is all done electronically. When you first open the account you send them a cheque in the mail that is linked to the account you want to be able to transfer money in and out of. After that all you have to do is go onto the ING website and log into your account there to transfer money in and out.

I'm glad you could answer that! It's been so long since I opened our account that I honestly don't remember sending in a check. I would have thought I did it all on-line. With the kid's accounts you have to have an adult on the account anyway so their accounts were just linked to our account and then it can use the same checking account without having to confirm it again.

I also like that it takes three days to get the money.

I've always been afraid that they would start some sort of Tinker Bell meet with a full sized Tink. It would be cool if they could do some sort of projection where the kids could meet a small interactive Tink. I just don't know how they would do that. But we loves us some Tink!

I have looked into the Syracuse to Seattle deal it is about $400 for a flight, not bad for cross country. We would then have to rent a car though and deal with the hassle of crossing the border four times in one trip. The city my dad wants to move to isn't close to the border either like the city where my Grandma lives. So basically the costs would be about the same once all was said and done with.

I'm sure we will visit every few years with him coming here or us going there but it definitely will not be a frequent thing unless somebody in the family becomes a millionaire!

You know, I do think Mom said something about the farm land being deeded to her already, so maybe they haven't adjusted for that? I'll ask more about it.

They have been getting some Meals on Wheels. Tiny towns are good for "helpers" too (though there are a limited supply) - which is why they were easy enough to find when he decided to drive - but all the dr. appointments, calls in the middle of the night, etc. come to my mom.

Thanks, everyone. I have known these issues for a long time. My mom says that coming and staying with my twin 6 year olds is less stressful than being here with her parents, so it's not a surprise. I just haven't been with her HERE in about a year (and then only for a couple of days) so it's really bringing it home. I think especially so because there was the recent "incident".

His shoulder does have a hairline fracture, which will at least keep him from driving anywhere for a while. It probably does mean that my mom won't be driving back to NH with me, however.

I am off to bed.

I know it's a hard call, and maybe I'm being harsh, but I think it's time to consider a move to a nursing home. I love my grandparents, but they are NOT independent - they just are dependent on my mother. And I'm worried about her - she's 62 herself, you know? Not that it's old, but she doesn't need to be doing this.

That's so sad. I really don't see any other way for them to survive without some sort of assisted living.

That's terrible!!!! Anytime I even glance at the drink menu the waiter/waitress pounces and tries to get me to order something. They don't usually care what time of day it is. They usually just want the extra sales.
