I just read an announcement of the teacher rates at Dolphin and Swan for teachers. Amazing that they are from August 21 to Oct 2. Those dates are clearly on the school calendar. Unfortunately I don't know of many teachers who can request vacation time during the school year! Guess they don't have to worry about losing too much money on that deal!
I received the teacher rate in June 2003 and July 2004. I could not get it during spring break 2005. I think it has more to do with when the resort is somewhat empty due to no conventions. I know it has been available for part of Christmas vacation in years past also.
Technically, I don't think the teacher rates are for retired teachers. If she has a valid teaching certificate though, she might be able to get the teacher rate with that. You would need to call the Swan/Dolphin and ask. When I stayed there, they said teaching certificate or school ID required.
The October dates don't make sense, but my mom's a teacher and she doesn't start school until August 29. Some others in this area don't start until the day after Labor Day. We can't take advantage of the discount, but it's for reasons besides it interfering with the school year.
I got teacher's rate at Swan december 27, 2003-jan2, 2004. It was the only onsite hotel with any kind of discount at that time of year. Joined starwood right before and it has been great(accrued alot of points just that trip).

I teach in the UK. Would I be able to qualify for discount?
I am a DVC member and would perhaps add a room for a couple of nights if our points ran out.
I have a card to say Im a member of the general teaching council and I could being a copy of my degree?
Just a thought
I work in the public schools as a speech-language pathologist and have gotten the teacher's rate at the Swan/Dolphin, during the school year as well (Jan/Feb.) Some schools that are year round have long breaks at odd times. Some of us just take days too.

I'm an AP holder and we stayed at All-Star Music last Christmas for $49 a night. That was Dec. 20-27, 2004. What does the teacher's rate usually run? My DW is a teacher. Where is it posted? Or do I need to call?
Thanks

That just means they are offering teachers an especially huge discount during that time this year. Some schools have breaks throughout the year. My old school doesn't start until after Labor Day so any of those teachers would benefit from this. Or it could be for a long weekend since the rate is in effect until October. But it isn't the only time you can get a teacher's discount. I am staying at the Swan from August 12-August 16 at a teacher's rate of $149. Not as good as $99 but as low as they usually go on discounts so I'm pretty happy.
I too think it depends on availability. I've gotten a teacher's rate several different times throughout the year. To check it out, your can go to DIS HOME at the top of this page. On the right hand side you will see a small square for the Swan and Dolphin. You click on "book it", and it will take you to a Dreams Unlimited site where you can put in travel dates and check for rates without actually booking the room. If you get it at the right time (early before they are really booked I'd guess) the rates are REALLY reasonable. Once I went in August, and they asked me to bring a copy of my promise of employment letter from my district, not my contract. That wass before we started issuing school ID.
the rate is not just for teachers... it is for teachers, nurses and government workers... lots of those folks have (or can have) vacation time during the advertised time period...
