We are flying into Houston and sailing out of Galveston the following day. Our plan is to rent a car at the airport, tour Houston for a day and return the car in Texas City the following morning. Then from the rental car office, we want to take a cab to the port. I got a great deal on a one way rental ($35) and I've heard that a cab costs about $40 from Texas City to port, so it will be about $100 plus gas for my family of 5 which is cheaper than the shuttles plus we get to see Houston, go to the store and buy last minute items, etc. I've heard that cabs line up at the rental office since lots of people do this but in case this isn't so, can anyone recommend a taxi company that they've used previously?
We are hoping to do the same on the return in reverse.

I don't have any answers for you, but where were you able to get such a great deal on a one way rental? We looked and wound up renting for the week as it was cheaper than a one way!

Costco. keep checking prices. our one way from texas city to Bush airport is even cheaper at $20 inc. taxes, returned same day.
when i first booked it, it was $50 one way... then $38. just yesterday, $34. i figure even with gas and the taxi to port, it is still cheaper than the shuttle and we have the freedom of having a car.
These prices are for a full size car both ways.

Thanks! It is only about $80 for one way right now, as compared to our $300 weekly rental. I'll see what kind of taxi answers you get before making my decision!

if the one way is a good price right now, i suggest booking thru Costco as it costs nothing to book and cancel later. I have booked and cancelled 3 times as prices have gone lower on our airport pick up reservation. However, our texas city pick up reservation price went up after i booked so im glad i locked it in.

hopefully it all works out. my two big comcerns are taxi availability and having a car ready and waiting for us when we return. When i called the rental office they claim taxis line up in front of their office cuz lots of people do this and u can sometimes even split a big van taxi with others. however, i have not read much on the boards from people who have actually done it. fingers crossed.

My one way rental from IAH to Texas City just got even cheaper to $30 for full size 24 hr rental. I called a taxi company to ck and they said from texas city to the port is between $35- $45 depending on where in texas city they pick u up and traffic and availability isnt an issue, just call them. We shall see soon.

Are you sailing in November? We are booked on the November 14th cruise on the Wonder and we are also flying into Galveston the day before.

As far as the car rentals, sorry, I'm no help. I'm not sure what our flight times are yet so we don't have any plans for when we get to Galveston.

What rental car company are you using? I was born in Texas City...my parents still live in the area and both still work out of Texas City. My Mom's office shares a parking lot with Enterprise and I have never seen taxi's lining up there. In fact, I've rarely seen taxi's in TC. And there's not much to see in TC, it's a refinery town.

Actually, we are leaving today.
On the way to galveston now in a cab.
this is what we did:
Rental car: $30 one way from Bush to Texas City from Budget thru Costco.
stayed in Fairfield Inn which is in the same parking lot as the Budget office.
We called Busy Bee taxi and for a flat $40 plus tip he is taking us to port. the taxi is not new or luxurious but it does the job. we are sitting 4 people in the back and husband at front.

so for my family of 5
$30 rental
18 rental insurance
8 gas
45 taxi and tip.
$101 total which is much cheaper than the shuttle and we got a car for the day yesterday.

when i first booked it was $50 thru costco but i kept watching the rates. and it eventually went down to $30 for a full size.

Just got back. On our return we got a cab back to Texas City $47 plus tip. this was a metered fare and not a flat fee like our previous ride. We picked up our rental $18 out the door from Avis Texas City booked thru costco ( Kia SUV). we were in and out of the rental office in 10 min.
we went to the Houston water wall for a quick visit and lunch at a bbq place. Hubby is getting gas for the rental now.. just a couple gallons. So we are still at about $110 or so for my family of 5.

Our round trip transportation is less than $250. there are tolls and we chose to use the car's toll reader so i will probably get a small bill.
I highly suggest going this route if u can get a good deal on a rental. It gives you the freedom to explore houston a bit and get to port on your own time.
I talked to a couple who bought the shuttle transfer and they have to wait at the airport for several hours. no fun.

To go to the port, we used busy bee taxi. on the way back it was the galveston taxi company.
