Has anyone taken a taxi from the airport to their resort? Is it quicker than Magical Express? Any idea how much it would cost? Thanks for any input.

One of the unknown variables is how long you would have to wait for your checked bags to arrive vs just letting DME handle that for you. Another unknown is how long you might sit on a DME bus before it leaves the airport. Yet another unknown is what stop you are on DME once you get to WDW.

We always take our bags with us on ME and orlando airport takes a long time for bags to come through...15 or 20 minutes. And we still use ME for the conveniece and the price tag...ie $0.

Does it save you time? Probably. I've taken a car service to my WDW resort, as well as the Mears shuttle, and DME. Never a cab though. For just about the same money, I can get a private car service.
With a car service, my times have been 45 mins with carry on bags only, and about 60 mins with checked bags. With DME, I've had times as short as 60 mins, but as long as close to 90. Most have been in the 70-75 min range. So, you need to decide if spending about $60 is worth 30 mins.

We have taken a limo service. 130.00 round trip, with a stop at a grocery store. We only have carry on luggage, so no wait for checked bags. DH prefers a private service to the ME because it's faster and more personalized, so it's been a few years since we have used Disney transportation from the airport.

A taxi runs about $60 from airport to Disney. Not likely to save tremendous amounts of time

If you're trying to avoid DME, arrange a town car in advance rather than a taxi. The service & ride will likely be better, and the price will be close to a taxi. You'll save more time this way if you only bring carry-on luggage. If you have to wait for checked bags, you'll still save some time, but not all that much. I've used a town car for 2 trips & have since gone back to DME, because the experience wasn't worth the money to me.

Don't expect Disney magic on the drive: you'll likely have to make some small talk with the driver (who may not be into Disney at all), and the driver might try to play music you don't like. I hated having to ask a driver to turn the grungy pop music off- he should have known better to begin with, but I still didn't like having to do that as I began my vacation- but didn't want to listen to it as we entered Disney World, either, because that evokes special feelings in me. I've also had drivers be late on the way back to the airport, & be sent to the wrong place to pick us up. The upside is it's nice to have your own car waiting, take off immediately, etc. Usually they give you a water bottle, too. But overall not an experience I want to repeat. Here's why:

  • I love checking in my luggage with DME tags on them at my home airport, knowing I won't have to deal with the bags again until they arrive at our resort room.
  • My son and I enjoy the Disney cartoons that play on DME.
  • I like not having to text back and forth with the driver the day before & day of, confirming that I still want to be picked up.
  • I like knowing that even if my flight is delayed, the bus will be there for us, without having to make special arrangements.
  • Because I can just relax and let Disney handle it all, DME feels more like vacation to me.
