Taxation without representation-teens

They're minors. As such, they ARE thoroughly covered by the law -- they are protected by more laws than we adults. And it isn't that they are never going to be allowed to vote (i.e., like slaves years ago); rather, they have a few years of minor status, then they're eligible to vote for the rest of their lives.

Ok, as Americans we are guaranteed no taxation without representation, right?

Where are we guaranteed that? I know it was a rallying cry for the colonists, but I don't believe it is in the Constitution...:confused3

ETA, I live in one state and pay taxes in another (where I work). I own property in a third state and pay property taxes there but I can't vote there. I also know legal residents who are not citizens who pay taxes.

True, but the government has that money, interest free, until tax time.
Anyway, it was a stupid question on my part. I learned that when I got laughed at. Guess it was something obvious and must have missed that day in Economics... I had just never heard a discussion on it.
Back to my hiding place :guilty:

Was my question really that ignorant? I honestly didn't know.

OP, I'm sorry - I wasn't laughing AT you! I just thought you were trying to sneak a political discussion into the new and improved DIS, and I was reacting to that. It just made me think of the teabaggers for some reason and I picked the rolling laugh guy instead of the popcorn guy - because I hate the popcorn guy.

It just struck me as a little bit of an over-reaction to the typical earnings of a 15 year old in a minimum wage summer job, that's all. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings.

It's all good. I swear, I wasn't trying to sneak anything concerning modern day politics on the board. I hate the popcorn guy too, and I wasn't trying to stir the pot. I suppose it came across as an over reaction because I honestly had never given it any thought. It was one of those "wow, I never thought of that before, and what's the justification for it??". I don't care how much my children are taxed as long as its fair, I just threw that info in there so no one would think I was a teen protesting being taxed. So I'm not overreacting to my daughters future taxing, I just didn't know the justification. But thanks to some mocking on this thread, I will triple think before I start a post.
Thanks for your apology...I'm just way too think skinned to be on this board. I will lurk, but try to refrain from posting.:surfweb:

Ok, point taken. I didn't google the Constitution before I posted. Thanks for pointing this out with the little confusion face.

Please don't let it bother you. Sometimes what may seem a simplistic question to one person is something someone else just hadn't considered, but once they ask, the simplicity becomes apparent to them. It's called *gasp* learning.

Thank you Maleficent...I hate to be made to feel like an idiot. I appreciate your post. I am an idiot in some things, but it hurts to have it pointed out so much. So thank you for your kindness.

Oh, don't stop posting - that's the fun part!!!! Just because I randomly clicked an icon doesn't mean I didn't think it was a valid question, too!!

They can change their withholding tables to get nothing taken out if they wanted to, though most teens don't know/understand withholding tables.

PS It wasn't a stupid question.

Actually I used that icon because I figured someone would respond to my post citing section number and paragraph number where this was located in the constitution, or else refer me to some Supreme Court decision where this right was granted or something. (I haven't read the constitution in a very long time!) :goodvibes

Thanks to everyone for all their answers. I'm sorry I'm so hypersensitive. I really think I'll just stick to reading, because I do overreact when I really shouldn't. All these years on the internet and I still forget that tone can't really be expressed in a forum and so I shouldn't be offended. Thanks for putting up with me!

Ok, as Americans we are guaranteed no taxation without representation, right? What about teenagers under the age of 18 who work? Why are they taxed? Anyone have a clue? They can't vote, therefore they aren't represented. They have to pay Fed and State income tax on their earnings. I'm wondering if there is a justification for this. Thoughts?
BTW, I am an adult, but I have a DD 15 who may think about getting a job this summer or next.

I never thought of that, but its a great point
