It is tax free weekend here in Massachusetts. Figured I would mention it in case others weren’t aware. We may go look for a dishwasher or washing machine tomorrow. We need to replace both and saving 6.25% can’t hurt.

I have some Target returns that's been sitting in the car for weeks, I was dreading going there today thinking it would be mobbed with Tax Free shoppers, but surprisingly not. I even did a quick walk through to pick up some stuff and went through self check out with no lines. Stopped at Nordstrom Rack and same thing, no lines. I think the great weather today steered people to the beach instead of shopping.

Wish that they did that in California. California has never met a tax it didn't like, and there are NEVER tax holidays.

The legislation for this here in VA expired this year and was not renewed. So no tax free weekend for us here this year.

Last weekend was tax free weekend in South Carolina. Was able to grab some shirts from the gift shop at Disney's HHI resort.
Yeah - I went to Target and Belks and bought some school clothes for the Grands…SC’s tax free only applies to clothes and school supplies-including laptops and printers…but not (as an example) games or toiletries or appliances.

We popped over to look at freezers at Home Depot, but didn't pull the trigger yet. It hasn't stopped working, just makes a loud noise sometimes, so I'm starting to look in case it goes soon. I was intrigued by smaller ones that are convertible between freezer and extra fridge space. Two of those is cheeper than a big one. I'm going to give it some thought.

Georgia used to have two tax free weekends a year but stopped many, many, many years ago.

Tennessee had their tax free weekend July 28-30, but just on clothes, shoes under a certain amount, computers, and a few other things. My daughter started working at a clothing store in the mall this summer. I'd warned her that tax free weekend would be like Black Friday and Christmas put together, and it was. Completely insane. I always wait to stock up on essentials during that weekend, and get stuff like shoes, etc.
I wish they'd change it to allow more items, and more variety.
The are now doing a 3 month tax free holiday on food! (August-Oct) prepared food not included. It's a great help. Now we can restock our zombie apocalypse pantry!

Yeah my sister was buying a non clothing item and that's when we learned it only applied to clothes.

Immediately after the weekend, HHI got the Halloween collection in and we were like ugh wish it was still tax free.

We have a sales tax free weekend every time we drive from Seattle to Portland, OR. The Costcos just across the border in Oregon sell plenty of big screen TVs and electronics. The Costcos in Vancouver, WA don't sell any.

I am always taken aback when we go to SC or other states and have to pay tax on clothes. In Massachusetts we don’t have to.
Up until the end of 2007-SC had sales tax on all food!

No tax holidays here, though clothing and most food purchases aren’t taxable events.

NH has no sales tax on anything. We lived on the border growing up and always went when my parents made major purchases. MA doesn’t tax shoes or clothing, but they tax everything else (we pay sales tax on the value of our vehicles every year, not sure how many states do that). I ordered a few things online, I figured stores would be busy.

I never 'got' the whole tax holiday thing.

Offer 6% off and everyone rushes to the store.

If Best Buy offered a sale of $18 on a $300 item, everyone would ignore it.

Well when you normally pay sales tax on stuff it's mighty nice to at least get a break on part of it. We don't have it in KS (just can't seem to get passed) but MO does. I live near the border and it's easy for many to go to the other side. Theirs was early August.

It's not about a sale a store puts on but rather your tax burden. I generally don't find sales to be worse during any tax free weekends probably because they occur right when school is starting back up when you already have back to school sales. If I can just cross state lines and pay less on an identical item purely because the sales tax will be even more less than normal I'd take it.

For MO theirs was
  • Back to School Clothing – any article having a taxable value of $100 or less
  • School supplies – not to exceed $50 per purchase
  • Computer & technology software – taxable value of $350 or less
  • Personal laptops/computers – not to exceed $1,500
  • Computer peripheral devices – not to exceed $1,500
  • Graphing Calculators – not to exceed $150
