Target Red Card.. Yes or No

DH and I really don't charge a lot on our credit cards and don't have any CC debt, we have them but only use them really when we travel, or for something unexpected. Normally we pay them off monthly.

So I have been reading about the target Red Card, trying to decided if its something that we want. Basically I want it for Gift Card purchases. So I would buy them, pay off in store after going thru the cashier or pay off on line after purchasing.

So am I right I can get 5% off any gift card that I purchase?

I am a bit confused... I have read that... if I am understanding correctly... sometimes they go on sale for say 10% off then if you use the red card you can get additional 5% off. Is that right?

Then my friend said she got GC last year on Black Friday for like 20% off then 5% additional when she used her Red Card.. I am not sure if it was on all GC or what..

So if I am right is it a true 15% off or 10% then 5% off remainder after the 10% is taken off?

Are there any other benefits, to having a Red Card?

My family needs are changing and they really want or need gift cards, for daily things, or dinner out, movies, WDW, and such.. Also we are planning to for my DGS 2 birthday to be at WDW, I would like to squirrel away some WDW GC, and also tuck some into my DD and DSIL and DGS stocking at Christmas.

So any thoughts or info in always much appreciated.

I can't answer the question about sales, I've never done that. But if you don't want a target credit card you can get the exact same benefits with a target debit red card.

Typically its 5% with the Red Card. I haven't heard about deals on black friday. But I'm not sure. What I like about the red card is that it can be Credit or...Debit!!! Straight from your bank account and super simple! I mean if it is just a debit card and your gonna shop at Target anyway, so why not get the extra discount? You'll get the 5% off for Disney cards and everything else! I dunno about the other benefits, but I mean, you do get extra coupons, extra return time (90 days), free shipping online and the discount stacks with other discounts. I know it used to be 10% off with Target employees and then the additional 5%, but they have since removed the team member discount working on gift cards :sad:which as a Target employee has been a great loss! Ha ha! Sorry I don't know much about the holidays and other discounts, but hopefully that helped a bit! Have a happy trip!!

Not even getting into the gift card thing, it's great to have just for the 5% extra on EVERYTHING! Even though it's a Visa card, I use mine as a store card. Don't use it anywhere but Target. But I use it for everything I buy at Target. That extra 5% really adds up over the course of a year. And I just pay the bill every month when it comes in so no interest.

I have done the Raise to get Target cards and then online to purchase Disney cards. So far I've saved about $300 for my trip next month! Definitely look at the threads that detail exactly how to do these deals and it will add up to great savings.

If you go to the thread Disney gift card deals( think that is the one) , it explains the whole buying of target gift cards then going on to the target website to get the extra 5%. I do it and it has been a great way to save money. I held out on the red card and then had the same thought... It's just like my debit card so why not get the 5% off. I didn't get the credit card.

You can get the RED debit card. We have one and it's just like using my own debit card. You get 5% every day off the "entertainment" gift cards, which includes Disney. The only time I've ever seen any % off of Target gift cards was this past year on Black Friday. You were allowed to purchase $300 in Target gift cards for 10% off.

I have the Target Red Debit Card. I held back because I didn't want another credit card and then I found out they had a debit card, as well. I love it! 5% off everything. Earlier this year they had iTunes GC on sale and an extra 5% with the Red Card.

I have the debit card and if I use it on line I got through ebates where you more often than not get 2% cash back so you get the 5% target discount and the cash back through ebates.

I'm not a big credit card person (only have 2 cards & never carry a balance) so I enjoy my Target debit card. Not only can you get the benefits mentioned by previous posters but, if you register your card with the school rewards program, they will donate 1% of your purchase to the school of your choice :)

I love my red target cars. Only use it at target. And typically save from 5 to 20 per visit with the automatic 5% discount. I see a lot of people who charge but don't have the target card. It doesn't cost anything and the automatic 5% discount makes it a no brainier for me. My typical monthly bill is between 300 and 400 a month so thsts a lot of savings.

I also just have the debit card, another plus that i love is free shipping when you use your Red Card regardless of order size. The Target near me is at a mall and it's a pain to get in and out of quick, so when they have staples such as paper towels on sale, it's nice just to order online and have it show up a few days later shipping for free while saving 5%.

Another Target Debit card user here. That way I can skip the "go pay at the customer service counter" step.
As for the 10% +5% bit: Recently, gift cards have been excluded from those deals, but when discounts stack (like when using a % off coupon and a Target card discount on purchases other than gift cards) it's not a true 10%+5%=15% discount. It is 10% off, then 5% off the remaining balance.

I, too, have a Target Red Debit Card. I am a big Target shopper and the savings definitely add up.

Think the OP may be talking about stacking discounts on Target GCs with the Red Card discount. So buying Target GCs on one of the discount sites, then using those online to purchase Disney gift cards and still getting the 5%. That's what I've been doing and saving a bunch!

Not even getting into the gift card thing, it's great to have just for the 5% extra on EVERYTHING! Even though it's a Visa card, I use mine as a store card. Don't use it anywhere but Target.

i don't think they offer the VISA option any more. i might be wrong but it looks like new credit card holders can only use it as a store card.

Get the Target Red Debit Card! :)

And thanks to this thread, I shall be watching carefully for black friday deals in case they offer something for Target gift cards. Haha!

I have the Target credit card for the 5% discount, but don't carry a balance. I recently opened the Target debit card, which gives you the same 5% and is attached to your checking account.

Didn't read all the posts but whenever percentage sales/deals stack at Target they fully do one then the next.

So if you bought an item that was was exactly $100 and you had 10% off for the item on cartwheel and had 5% off for your red card you would be charged $85.50 before tax then tax would be added to that.
