Target no longer taking cheques

One of the podcasts I listen to did a series on how different America is from the rest of the world and why it does not make sense to continue to compare them. Things are so different at a cultural level that the impacts affect unexpected things.

I think the adoption of person to person bank transfers is one of those things that won't happen in mass for America until a large percentage of people are forced as they kick and scream.

Until then checks will play a less and lesser role while a more vocal minority screams about their rights to use a check.

Person to person bank transfer? We do that on our bank apps in Canada.
My understanding is its done by 3rd party apps in the USA.
Very different banking systems! USA is much more fractured.

TIL that Target accepted checks. Many stores around me don't accept them and haven't for a while now. I actually saw someone try to pay with a check at a grocery store and was denied.

LOL. I never thought I would use my credit card like I do now, for groceries, etc, but about 4 years ago I finally gave in. Earlier this year I did ask about if my grocery store would accept TRAVELER'S checks. It was only then that I found out they no longer took regular checks. Clerk said they would take Traveler's checks because they are considered cash. Actually better than cash because if they take counterfeit cash, they are on the hook for that, but the Traveler's Check companies will honor that.
And as I have mentioned before, my daughter is in the process of selling her house and the power washing company, pest inspection, roof inspection /repair people all gave discounts for cash or check. My daughter is 33 and had a checking account for 10 years, but never ordered checks until she bought her house 5 years because soo many things she has needed done related to the house required or gave a discount for a check.

My dentist charges 3% fee on the credit card. They said they take cash or check. I owed $16 and I gave $20 and then they said they had no change!!!! You better believe I bring my check book to every dentist appointment.

Walmart still accepts personal checks, Target is basically the direct competitor but I'm not sure if Walmart would immediately file suit and stop accepting personal checks, just based on observations I hadn't really seen many people use a personal check at Target but more common (though still a lot less than years prior) at Walmart.

I agree it would be weird to accept cash but never have any change at a place that could readily have change if they wanted to. I'm thinking in comparison to places like a bus for public transit that may be more exact change for logistical reasons.

Yeah, I saw that story the other day and wasn’t aware that Target still accepted checks. Or any retail store accepted them.

If one has a checking account, one can get and use a debit card attached to it.

I am always surprised when someone writes a check at the store.

My checks are over 15 years old. Not only do they have the wrong address they have the wrong bank name on them. I use them for repair people when they come for service.

I didn't realize that Traveler's Checks were still a thing, haven't seen them in at least 25 years!

They are basically dead. American Express no longer issues them. But they were my daughter's emergency money supply when we was going to school in England 2013-14 as there were times when she found a place whose chip card reader did not like her U.S. debit and credit card . However, American Express points out that banks still honor them, and AE still backs them if stolen.

Oh no. Now you got be worried that my greenbax stamps might not good anymore too.
