I'm the single mom of a 15 month old. Would LOVE to take him for his first trip to DW in early December when he's 22 mos. Have been there many times myself and know how much I'd have to scale back. In fact, I am thinking we'd really only do MK and take our sweet time. The logical side of me thinks I should wait until he's at least 3 years old but the emotional side of me thinks we have so much to "celebrate" from the past year -- his 1st year, my 40th year (yikes) and finalizing his adoption. Plus, I haven't taken a vacation since 2006. :charac2:

So I am being totally self-indulgent here and want you all to talk me into it. :) Anyone done a mommy and me trip with one that young and survived? I've never been to DW at the holidays -- are the extras enough to keep us entertained and make up for missing some of the big kid rides?

Thanks in advance for your input!

I would say yes take your son to WDW enjoy celebrate. I am thinking of takin my niece to WDW in March 2010 she will be 23 months by then she will be able to walk correctly with out loosing balance too much and she enjoys the rides well baby rides that is. My niece knows what she wants she loves Chuck e Cheese and we put her in the rides and loves it. I haven't done the holidays in WDW although I would love to but no $$$ so I have to wait until March which is ok.

GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO!!:goodvibes

My DD (would have been 23 mths) and I went last August - just the 2 of us, for 9 days. I can honestly say I have NEVER had more fun than when it was just with her and I. :thumbsup2 (I have been there a million times and been a CM too). Talk about a blast. We took our time, made sure that NEITHER of us got tired. (Came in early, took naps in the room). We did go to all 4 parks. Yes, I lugged everything with us - the big Graco stroller, diaper bag and an extra bag + her. She figured out real quick how to get on/off the buses by herself. I could talk about it forever!

Reasons to go:
1. CELEBRATE! If you can go now - money, etc do it. Life is so short, you never know what may happen in the future.
2. He is still FREE!
3. You will never ever ever forget how much fun he will have.
4. I am a firm believer that even though she probably won't remember everything 5 years from now, I think that she learned so much from being there.
5. You won't really miss the big kid rides - most of the stuff he can go on, and the other stuff you won't care about not going on.
6. You already know the parks and how to get around, so you don't have to get yourself acquainted w/ everything.

Let me know if you have any other questions, I would love to share. We just came back in January when we went with DH too. We had a blast then too, but I think that we still had more fun just the 2 of us. We're going this August too. My mom and nephew are going with us, but we'll still do stuff by ourselves too - which is fine by me!!

There is SO much for the younger generation to enjoy!! IMHO the older ones are those who miss out... by not being big enough to do the thrill rides, you can really stop and see everything that WDW has to offer! :goodvibes You aren't in such a rush to hurry up and wait in line.

I could go on and on about what there is to do, and still not cover it all. There are some rides he could do (Peter Pan, Small World, Dumbo, carosel, jungle cruise, etc) plus storytime in the garden by the castle, meeting Mickey and friends, playing at the little playspots littered across the grounds, riding the train, taking the riverboat, riding the monorail, seeing fireworks!!! :yay:

GO! Enjoy the time together and celebrate having him around and the two of you being together. It's a very special thing you are doing :cheer2: and it should be celebrated.

Thanks so much to both of you!

Lizet313 -- excellent point about the walking. I was very close to taking him last December and realized I was not looking forward to carrying him when he got tired of the stroller. No guarantee I won't still have to carry him at times, but at least walking gives us a third option!

And bless you, Adventure Woman! You just confirmed many of the things I was thinking (including the "free under 3" factor ;)). Did you fly or drive? Where did you stay? How did you handle meals? How about naps? Clearly, yes, I would LOVE to hear more about your trip! Any not-to-be-missed highlights?

Well, while I am not a single mom I have had my kids at the parks at EVERY age and I think they were all fun...even 3 months old. I did manage to do 2 parks in 1 day w/ a 10 yo and a 3 yo while I was 4 months pregnant so I'm bettin' you can do it and have a good time;)

And thanks kwitcher. After being on these boards for about a year I have realized that in my past trips I have blown by so many of the neat details to get to the rides. Main Street? pffffft. Get me to Space Mountain asap! And I am embarrassed to admit that I have never been in Cindy's castle.

That's why I am thinking we'll focus mostly on MK -- and maybe HS.

Transportation - We flew nonstop from Detroit to MCO. She was still on my lap (FREE AGAIN!!) and it was 'ok'. (Warning - not all airplanes have changing tables in bathroom!!:scared1:)

Resort - Haha. We actually had to switch halfway through. We stayed at both ASSports and ASMovies. I have been there before, and although I would love to stay at a moderate/deluxe, there is no way I could have afforded it (or justified spending more money). I like them anyway, so no problems.

Naps - we tried twice to take a nap in the stroller. 1st time was only about 45 minutes. The 2nd time was about 1 1/2 hrs. It was just easier to go back to the room and make sure she slept good. Again, I didn't want to get her tired, because that would make her cranky and w/ only me there....didn't want that to happen!

Meals - that is the only thing I would change about my DD - she doesn't really eat, except for fruit. (Finally getting a little better in the last week or so). Because I was on a budget, I got a kids meals a lot for me, drank water. I brought down cereal, juice, etc in our luggage so I didn't have to buy that.

She loved all the parks. MK - that's a given - Fantasyland. She really enjoyed the playgrounds and picking up the pixie dust on the floor. She loved all the music she heard on Main Street. Epcot - the interactive water fountains - she could stay there for a LONG time! The lighted pavement at night. The hot air balloons in the Land (on the ceiling for decoration!). DHS - Playhouse Disney was AWESOME!! Little Mermaid. AK - the ducks and the birds were her favorite. We loved walking around the tree of life and looking at all the animals. She was in such awe the 1st half of the trip. I basically just did everything I thought she would enjoy. It was great. You literally make all the decisions. You don't have to decide where to go, where to eat, etc. You just make the decisions. It was very relaxing actually! I laughed because I would hear an 8 yr old whining about something or complaining and I thought - gosh, being almost 2 is great!

If I could recommend one thing - to go for 8 or 9 days. It makes it so much easier having the couple extra days, you can see more and go at a slower pace.

Also, be prepared the 1st day or so YOU will be sore. My mom is in a wheelchair, so normally DD sits on her lap. I didn't realize how LONG the lines were to walk through (ie Small World, Peter Pan, PIRATES!! :scared1:has a REALLY long line to walk through)! I usually tried to carry her, because I didn't want her to get so exhausted walking that far, and she was a little nervous. My legs were tired from lifting her so much. (AND I work where I lift heavy pkgs for 3 hrs a day!)

Since you have been there before, you probably know NOT to wait in lines. Either get up early, get a fast pass or go by. We NEVER waited in a line and that definately helped.

He may or may not like the characters. In August my DD didn't mind the characters. In January (4 months later!) she was terrified of them!! (Not so much the face ones, but Mickey and all the others).

Buffets are tricky to eat at. The only time I got stressed out the entire time was when we ate at Chef Mickey's (our only buffet this trip). I think it was because I had to bring her up with me to get food, I was trying to document everything - video AND camera plus get autographs in her book and on her t-shirt. Way too much. This next time, I need to pick 1 thing to do while at a buffet, not try to do ALL things at once!:rolleyes1

Get the photopass CD. I am such a picture person. It was so much fun to get almost 500 pictures taken. It was so much easier to get a couple done by them, rather than giving someone my camera everytime. I would also tell them I am getting the CD and ask them to snap away!

Let me know if you have other questions. Start planning! It's awesome.

I agree with everyone else! Some of my fave pics were of DS when he was that age at WDW, and after going through a rough divorce, we both needed that trip, I will never forget those memories!!

Thanks All! It helps so much to hear from those who have BTDT. I totally agree about it being easier to be the one calling all the shots (well, with SOME input from my little traveling companion, I'm sure). Flight prices are pretty decent right now and I just got my healthy tax refund, so all the stars seem to be aligning. :goodvibes

Transportation - We flew nonstop from Detroit to MCO. She was still on my lap (FREE AGAIN!!) and it was 'ok'.

After my false start with trying to take him last December, I actually have a flight credit in his name -- so he'll be getting a seat. Think I will rent one of those CARES restraints rather than hauling his car seat. Did you rent a car or use DW transportation.

Resort - Haha. We actually had to switch halfway through. We stayed at both ASSports and ASMovies. I have been there before, and although I would love to stay at a moderate/deluxe, there is no way I could have afforded it (or justified spending more money). I like them anyway, so no problems.

Yeah, I am thinking Pop. I think he'll get a kick out of all there is to see. Did you rent a crib or pack-n-play?

Also, be prepared the 1st day or so YOU will be sore. My mom is in a wheelchair, so normally DD sits on her lap. I didn't realize how LONG the lines were to walk through (ie Small World, Peter Pan, PIRATES!! :scared1:has a REALLY long line to walk through)!

Great point! I'd better start a walking regime now. Can you only take the stroller to the entrance of the line?

Since you have been there before, you probably know NOT to wait in lines. Either get up early, get a fast pass or go by. We NEVER waited in a line and that definately helped.

Yes!

So with that CD you just get all the shots they take for like $99, right?

Let me know if you have other questions. Start planning! It's awesome.

Oh, I will! ;)

Go! It sounds like you have so much to celebrate! We took our DDs this past December and the younger one was 18 months. She was great! She loved all the characters (Pluto was her favorite - she screamed like a schoolgirl meeting Elvis each time she saw him), was amazed at all the sights and sounds, loved parades, and loved the rides.

We used the pack n' play provided in the hotel (SSR) but I brought my own sheet from home, her blanket, and her favorite stuffed animal to sleep with. And a nightlight!

Have a wonderful time! :goodvibes

If you need a vacation....take one. I can't think of a better place to go with a child.

We have taken DS at 14 months and again at 16 months, he'll be 29 months when we go again. Expericing Disney through the eyes of a wee little one is like NOTHING else.

Be very flexiable, take time to enjoy the little things, like a duck or a water feature. You will LOVE it! It's wonderful.

MK is the best for them, they can ride almost everything with you. Our DS also enjoyed the play parks at the various other parks and the boat rides to/from the resorts.

CONGRATULATIONS on adopting - you are a hero! :goodvibes

I say go, too.

But one thing that no one else really pointed out. I think, if you can, try all the parks. I think MK was almost my guy's (he was younger, only 10 mos) least favorite. Mostly because it was the most crowded.

I'm sure your son would love playing at the boneyard in AK, and if he likes animals, I'm sure he'd love all of AK.

My son LOVED The SEAS at Epcot. Also, he had a ball running around Innoventions.

HS was probably the most boring for him though he did okay in the Honey I Shrunk The Kids playground.

Have a great trip!!

Definitely go! There's so much to do with him! Took DD at 18 months (14 months corrected age as she was so early) and she loved it! Definitely try and book one character meal; that way if you're little one hates it, you don't have too many, but if they love it, you'll have priceless pictures. My DD tried to eat the noses of all the fur characters. I remember that trip so fondly; and it seems like your expectations are right on track. Plus, it's the holidays, so spend some time looking at all the neat decorations at the different resorts.

Many thanks for all your encouraging words. Your enthusiasm gave me goosebumps. I am 95% there -- now I just need to convince myself to spend the money!
