A 34-year-old homeless man staying with relatives in Springfield Township thanked his hosts by stealing $400 in change that they had been saving to take their children to Disney World, according to township police.

Roger Birkofer was arrested on a charge of theft Monday after the money was discovered missing Sunday, the day Birkofer was set to leave, the report said.

"The defendant no longer has the money, is homeless and probably will never be able to repay the money," police wrote in a report.

Birkofer was released from the Hamilton County Jail due to overcrowding.

It's a shame that this family opened their home to this man when he needed help and he did this to them. As an adult I might be able to say that I guess he needed the money more than I did - but that might be a hard thing to explain to a little one!

Hopefully at some point he'll see the error of his ways and maybe even make up for it somehow...not to them most likely...and they will recover eventually and move on. But I agree, it's an awful thing to do.

Well I had a brother in law who robbed whole family blind he lived with many siblings 13 in all at some point over his lifetime ALWAYS STOLE from them an always left them with a huge huge phone bill. Most of the siblings he lived with was struggling to make ends meet some lost their homes over this man.

Reallly really sucks when ya can't trust family........

I have a brother like this also. From the time he was little he stole, my Mother didn't nip it in the bud for some reason. Now we are all very careful when he comes over. He has even stolen money from my son, out of his bedroom, no guilt, no remorse.
