Okay I must have missed this one! What is this like? Something worth doing? Do you win anything? What is the best skit to do?

I can't answer you yet except to say that my kids are doing this for the first time. They are competitive dancers and I have always tried to get them to do their duet and this year they agreed :woohoo: The first (only?) rehearsal is tomorrow at 3 p.m. so we will know more. I do know it's not a competition, but rather a show, and few people do it. I think there are 8 acts including theirs signed up so far. There are 3 violin players, a piano player, 2 singers and a magician, as well as their dance. It does say no stand up comedy is allowed for some reason.

I will let you know more tomorrow.

The talent show is only on 7 day cruises. There are no prizes--it is not a competition. You sign up on the first or second day in a notebook by the excursion deck. There is a rehearsal (about an hour long) the night before the show. It is first signed up, first in.

You will see everything from kids who have studied various musical instruments or dance for years to semi-professional adults to a 5 year old who things that jumping rope is a talent. No one is denied participation based on ability or lack thereof. There are always a couple of really good participants....and usually a few that you hope they had a good time.

There used to be separate adult and kid shows....they are now one.

DisneyMom92,

My DS11 and DD8 both are interested in doing the Talent Show when we cruise in June. He plays the guitar and she is a baton twirler. I had asked on another thread about him bringing his guitar since the DCL rules say "no musical instruments allowed." Did the violinists have any problems (that you could see) bringing their instruments onboard? I would think the concern would be checking the instrument and DCL not wanting to be liable for any damage, but my son could carry his guitar onboard himself.

Also, my daughter's baton can fit in our suitcase, but I was concerned that it might be considered a weapon, kind of like a sword, which they don't like you to bring either (but sell in the store onboard!). What are your thoughts on packing the baton in our checked luggage (we are driving, not flying, so just w/DCL).

I am sure your kids dance routine will be wonderful! I have been in charge of our school's talent show for the past three years and it's so nice to have kids do talents other than just singing (they all want to be on American Idol!). Hey, those lessons cost a lot and the kids put so much time into them that they should get to show their skills off every chance they get!

So, let us know how it goes ... and your thoughts on the guitar and baton. It's not a MUST, but I'm sure my kids would enjoy performing for their new friends onboard. Thanks in advance!

Rose :)

I think the "no musical instruments" rule is like many others on DCL. The rule exists, but no one enforces it IF you're not disturbing other guests. I suspect there will be no problem with bringing the guitar. We've seen several instruments in various talent shows. You're right--I don't think DCL would take them as checked luggage.

The baton in your luggage is also a "non-issue." However, the ceiling of the club where the talent show is held is low--no high throws.

Thanks so much, kcashner!

We'll plan on taking the guitar onboard ourselves and as for my daughter's baton abilities, well, she's only 2nd year, so only one spin tosses so far. No danger of hitting any light fixtures yet! I guess if we bring a CD to use for her routine, they would be able to play it with no problem, too. Now I just need to save a little space in my garment bag for her dress and shoes.

Yeah! Less than 75 days to go ...
Rose :)

Sorry I didn't post sooner. I completely forgot I would report back. The violinists absolutely had no problems bringing them on board. I would definately carry the guitar, they get pretty rough with the luggage. Someone already said no problem with the baton in luggage, and I agree.

The talent show was a definite highlight to my kids' week. They had made so many friends that they all came to see them dance. It's funny, they would never do it before and now they are talking about doing it next time and what they will do. Everyone was good, but there was varying amounts of good there ;) The violinists were all really enjoyable, except we did kind of zone out after about 5 minutes. She played a full 10, and, while amazing, it got repetitive and boring. There was another violinist who played a medly of Disney tunes that was really enjoyable. She also played with 3 sisters, and that was really fun.

Two singers were absolutely star quality. The third was ok, but it was harder to hear her. The first two mentioned were obviously well trained, the third was more of a karaoke singer, but lots of stars have started that way, it seems. There was an adult who did a magic trick with a rope who was really good.

Now, a previous poster said that when you signed up it was first in the book, first up. It didn't work that way for us. My kids were the second in the book. They called them up last of the night. They also varied where the violinists were so that they weren't back to back, which was nice.

Another thing to note, if either of them use music to accompany their act, DCL has the capability to hook up an iPod, which is way more convenient than CDs for those of us who use one. IPods don't skip, scratch, break and are playable on virtually every system as long as there is a patch cord. DCL has one.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

We watched a talent show one year and the highlight was Joey Fatone's dad singing "Under The Boardwalk". He used to be a performer, and you could definitely tell. Joey was there cheering on his dad, but we were hoping he might particpate too! He didn't...:confused3
