Tale as Old as Time...a Feb 2017 Princess 5k and B-Day Trip! NEW 4/7 THE END of our trip!!

It's a really cool shirt! One day I will go there, but I want to go with my in-laws because they speak Mandarin better than both DH and I but my MIL doesn't want to go, says she doesn't like Shanghai!
My DH has been taking Mandarin for over 8 years. He is not fluent yet. His teacher is Shanghainese
We were in China 7 years ago and actually did ok in the big cities. In the smaller areas or those that see fewer Americans, it was tougher not being fluent in Mandarin

It's a snow day today and there's about 10 inches of snow outside right now. Sigh. I wish I were back in the warmth of WDW!

Day 3 Part 1: We "Wave" Goodbye to Billie and head to DHS

Today we had a breakfast at The Wave, someplace which I've always wanted to try. When Billie suggested we have a Dismeet breakfast there, I was all for it. It also helped that it was on the first floor of the Contemporary so we didn't have to go far. But for sure, I'd return even if we weren't staying there.

We arrived and met with @cinderkelly and her DD Devin and sat in the waiting area which looks like a space age nightclub.

But we didn't have to wait long at all as @Elevationist strolled in right after. We were shown our table and we got a nice big round table. I love round tables because it's so much easier to talk to everyone. I think we all selected the buffet except for Billie who ordered the French Toast I believe. This was actually just part of her official "breakfast" since she was coming back to eat with her family at The Wave in like an hour and a half! Impressive. Most impressive.

I was very impressed with the buffet. I expected it to be small and limited but it offered more than I thought it would, and the food was really good! I juggled two plates of food because as I said I am a lazy buffet eater and I just want to get everything all at once.

Like seriously I ate a lot of food. Eggs, bacon, oatmeal, yogurt parfait, fruit, croissant, biscuits n gravy (I didn't actually eat much biscuit tho), and of course Mickey waffles. I'm sure there were other random things I put in my mouth too. But we weren't planning to have lunch since we had limited time at DHS before we started our 7-hour Star Wars Tour! So I guess it was like two meals for me. :rolleyes1

I liked how they gave some spreads for the table. They had a maple pecan butter (I think) which was quite good!

I was really full by the time we left breakfast, but that was the point, right? :rotfl:

We said our last goodbyes to Billie who was leaving WDW that day (after 2nd breakfast...or was it 3rd?) and we got one final picture with everyone.

We had plans to meet up with @cinderkelly at some point during the rest of our stay so we were looking forward to that. After our goodbyes we headed out towards the bus to DHS!

DH was beginning to feel more like himself thank goodness as we had a long day at DHS ahead. I don't think we waited too long for a bus and soon we were on our way.

Our first FP for the day was Star Tours so we went and did that, even though we knew we'd be riding it again later as part of the tour, but since there is a tiering system with FP+ at DHS, it was really the only ride we wanted to go on.

Our next FP+ was for Voyage of the Little Mermaid but I decided to forgo the show to get some character pictures instead. We went to Red Carpet Dreams which is that new character spot for Sorcerer Mickey and Hollywood Minnie. It's located right across from ABC Commisary. We did this for the first time in December and thought it was super cute. What I didn't realize was that when waiting in line, once you get inside the building, there are these magic posters that come to life. It comes on every few minutes so when DH said the posters move, I was like, no it doesn't, but indeed it does.

We waited about 20 minutes for our picture with Minnie and Mickey.

The movie preview was sooo good. It's basically the first 15 minutes of the movie. All I can say is Luke Evans has a really good voice!! He was by far the most impressive singing in the preview. DH, who now has some bromance with Gaston, whole-heartedly agreed. :rotfl:

I wanted to meet Moana but her line was so long, about 40 minutes. In December it was 20 minutes so goes to show how crowded it was this weekend. We still had some time so I decided to browse the stores, while DH watched the BATB preview again.

We were on the new track. Not sure if the new track is only for FP or if it's a blend of standby and FP, but I like the new track...I think it felt smoother.

It was almost 12:45pm which was when we were supposed to check in for our tour, so we got a snack...a Mickey pretzel!

Coming up...our 7-hour Star Wars Guided Tour (yes it really was that long)!

Just got all caught up on your trip report. I've been following your DL trip report and just saw the link. I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm a frequent DL visitor, but an infrequent WDW visitor. However, I'll be in WDW in April for a long weekend for the Star Wars Dark Side half marathon, so I was particularly excited to read about your race experience. I just booked the trip pretty spontaneously last week so I can get my Kessel Run Challenge medal, and I'm actually leaving DH and my kids at home, so it will be a solo adventure (although some very nice ladies from the DISBoards invited me to join them for dinner on Sat. night :)) I've done two previous half marathons, both at DL (Tinkerbell in 2016 and Star Wars Light Side earlier this year). I walk them, but I'm a fast walker (for SWLS, my friend and I averaged just under 14 minute miles walking). I liked seeing your pictures of the contemporary. We are DVC owners, and our home resort is BLT, but we've never actually stayed there, LOL. I love that your favorite ride is Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, because that was one of my FastPass+ selections for Fri. night after I arrive! You also reminded me about Frozen Ever After in the Norway Pavilion at Epcot, so I just changed my FastPass+ for Epcot from Test Track to Frozen Ever After. (I've actually been on Test Track before, on one of my infrequent prior visits to WDW, and have been on Radiator Springs Races a lot, so this was a good switch.) I don't recall seeing a photo of your Princess Dooney. Can you post? Looking forward to the rest of your report!!

Thank you for reading and welcome! Wow congrats on all the runs you've completed so far, and congrats on getting the Kessel Run! I love that challenge name!
I really want to do Dark Side one year but I'm not sure if I will renew our AP for next year since there are some other travels we want to do, so perhaps for 2019. Wow you walk as fast as I run. I am a slow runner. Maybe I should just give up and walk fast. I'm not even sure what would be faster for me. :rotfl:

Will you be staying at BLT when you're there? It's very convenient to MK, it's the closest building to MK in fact, and you can walk there in about 10 minutes which is fantastic. That is a great idea to move your FP from TT to FEA, although FEA is a very short ride, you might be like, eh, that was it? But it's a well-done ride for sure. I like TT but I love RSR so that is no-brainer. We did Soarin' so many times on our last trip that we FP'ed TT on this trip just because we kinda missed it.

Here is my Princess Dooney:

I haven't used it yet. Maybe next time at WDW! Can't wait to see what they have for the dark side! Good luck on the run!

My DH has been taking Mandarin for over 8 years. He is not fluent yet. His teacher is Shanghainese
We were in China 7 years ago and actually did ok in the big cities. In the smaller areas or those that see fewer Americans, it was tougher not being fluent in Mandarin

Haha his Mandarin is probably better than mine and mine is better than DH's. We've failed miserably at being good Chinese kids, LOL

Your Dooney is super cute. Excellent choice for a bday present.

I'm not actually staying at BLT for Dark Side because I'm all out of DVC points (or rather saving them because I'm also signed up for 3 more runDisney half marathons (Tink, the Disneyland Half and 2018 SW Resistance)). But it all worked out because I ended up getting my Dark Side half bib at a nice discount from a TA, and their package included hotel and park tix. I'm trying to make this extra trip as budget friendly as possible, so I'm staying at the All Star Sports resort.

Can't wait to read about your Star Wars tour!

We got like 20"

It's insane. I thought it was supposed to be spring soon...

I love your acceptance speech. My trip is in June. I will have to remember the moving pictures.

Haha thanks!! Have a great time on your trip! Lucky you, you will be one of the first to go to Pandora!

Thank you!

That's a sweet deal! And I hear ya on the budget thing. We're staying all deluxe this year but I think next year we either won't do Disney at all or will stay mod or budget just so we can splurge again in 2019! :teeth:

Love the dismeet picture! I am hoping to get to meet some people on my trip. It's during the 20th anniversary so I am sure I will. My DD will be so excited to meet Sorcorer Mickey. I didn't know that was a regular M&G now.

Day 3 Part 2: Star Wars 7-Hour Guided Tour (Part 1)

At 12:45pm we checked in for our tour outside The Great Movie Ride. The tour began at 1pm. There is a kiosk to the far left of the entrance and there were CMs checking in guests. As we checked in we were given menus for Backlot Express so that we could pre-order our meal, and also given our VIP lanyards and name tags with our names spelled out in Aurebesh. On the back of the lanyard was a legend of what the symbols mean so you can translate other things on your own. If you go to Star Wars Launch bay you can use your card to figure out what is written on the walls of the Cantina.

When I made the reservation for the tour over the phone I was asked if we were dark side or light side. I said we were one of each, so I think that's why we have different colored name tags. Not that it really meant anything though.

Menu for this evening's dinner: We already knew what we wanted, I ordered the Dark Side Chicken n Waffles and DH got the Royal Guard Burger. It also comes with a drink.

We were given bottles of ice cold water while we were waiting for everyone to sign in. It was a nice touch and I appreciated it.

Excited for our tour!

Our tour guides were awesome. They were all fans of Star Wars and highly knowledgeable in Star Wars lore. These weren't just people working for Disney who were assigned these tours, these were people who KNEW the Star Wars universe and you could ask them any question you wanted and they would probably know the answer to it or find out for you. They walked around holding the light sabers as our way of finding them in the crowds. And it WAS crowded that day!

There were about 25 people in the tour including kids. We all went around and said our name and who our favorite character was. DH said Han Solo (of course) and I know people expected me to say Leia or Vader (because I was wearing a death star dress), and I do love those characters, but my all-time favorite character from when I was young really is R2-D2 because he is the unsung hero of the Rebelllion and just so cute. I don't wear a lot of R2-D2 stuff because it just isn't flattering on me (white spandex :crazy2:) and I naturally gravitate towards black so I tend to wear a lot of Vader and dark side clothing. LOL.

We were all given headsets to wear so we could all hear them. It was great as it allowed us to hear them really clearly even if we're running behind, especially when someone asked a question, they would repeat the question and then gave the answer. All throughout the tour they gave us little tidbits of information on behind the scenes stuff on Star Wars, and random trivia. I probably couldn't repeat it to you all now because I forget things like that easily..

Our first stop was the Path of the Jedi movie so we all followed them to the theater. On the way we spied characters from the Galaxy Far Far Away show which we would be watching later. If you want a better view of the characters without watching the show, just hang out behind the stage before or after the show as the characters have to pass this ways anyways.

At Path of the Jedi we were given first priority seating in the first couple of rows. Normally you don't really need this as the movie is never packed the times we've seen it before but it was a crowded weekend so there were definitely more people than usual.

After Path of the Jedi, we all reconvened outside the theater, and the kids who wanted to participate in Jedi Training headed to their pre-training briefing along with their adult chaperone. And yes, the Jedi Training is guaranteed for all the kids on the tour who want to participate. Everyone else would be going on The Great Movie Ride in the meantime.

I thought we would just be going through the FP line for TGMR, instead we were led through a separate door that led straight into that pre-ride movie area and then we headed right onto the ride itself. Yup we bypassed even the FP lines. This was pretty cool!

Backstage access to TGMR

We got the gangster on TGMR. After the ride we got a bathroom break then we headed towards Star Tours to watch Jedi Training. We got a reserved standing area right next to Backlot Express. This is great for those parents with cameras who need a front row view of their kids. It was crazy sunny that day though so it was super hard to capture pictures.

I have never watched Jedi Training in it's entirety or I've watched it from behind 12 rows of people so it was interesting for me to see it up front, however if you don't have kids or anyone you know participating it can get kind of tedious so you can always sit in Backlot Express for a bit to cool down or get a bit of shade (which is what I ended up doing).

After Jedi Training, all the kids joined their families again and we walked to the front of the park. We rested a bit in the shade on the side entrance of Mickey's of Hollywood. If you're walking into the entrance of Hollywood Studios you make the first left down the alleyway and you'll see some gated back lot areas and that's where we were. We were told the March of the First Order would be coming out of the gates. Cool! Then some CMs came out holding trays of popcorn and we were each handed a box of popcorn and more ice cold bottled water. OMG I was so happy. Nothing makes me happier than popcorn and I just about died when I got a box. I love Disney popcorn!

Funny story, someone not in our tour thought the CMs were handing out popcorn for to everyone for free so she ran across the street and tried to get a box but she was told only for the tour participants only. Denied! So she ran back across the street to join her party. One of the guys on the tour ended up crossing the street and giving her his box of popcorn. Think it was a dad who probably had more boxes of popcorn than he could carry. But it was a nice gesture and he got a cheering ovation from the group across the street, lol. I would not have been able to do that. I love my Disney popcorn too much, and I paid a lot of money for this box of popcorn hahaha.

We thought we would just have a first hand view of the March of the First Order with some popcorn, but what we were surprised to hear was that we'd be marching along with them....WHAT?!?
That was news to us and it sounded pretty cool!

After happily munching our popcorn for about 15 minutes, the March of the First Order started. We were told after they passed us that we'd just follow right behind them down Hollywood Blvd. The CMs guided us to where we were supposed to go and used their light sabers to prevent other people no on the tour from following suit.
I must say...it was a very cool experience to march in a mini-parade of storm troopers.

Our VIP tour guides did an excellent job of ensuring that only people in the tour got to be in the March. On more than one occasion people just came up and tried to join but they were told to "Move Along!" LOL.

I just love how the CMs are so into their role and marching in sync with the storm troopers. In this video I show you how incredibly excited I am to be holding a box of popcorn:

As we neared the Chinese Theater, we were led to a viewing area in the front left side of the stage and watched Captain Phasma and the storm troopers do their thing:

We stayed in our designated viewing area while the storm troopers and Captain Phasma matched back whence they came.

The viewing area was right in front and to the left of the Galaxy Far Far Away show which is where they place scenes from all the movies and introduce some of the most recognizable (non-face) characters. Even though our viewing area was right in front of the stage, the sun's glare was so bright that it was really hard to see at times. even with sunglasses.

Heres where they bring back everyone at the end:

After the show it was time for Star Tours! We also did not go through the FP line for this but I believe we went through the wheelchair accessible line instead. We had a 5 minute wait inside before they loaded us all into a vehicle. We waited on what seemed like a ramp on the 2nd level with the regular crowds below us. I didn't realize this as I don't often look up while in line for that ride but there is a lit up wall and you can see silhouettes of people walking by, Jedi, stormtroopers, droids, etc. And the guides told us that once in a while you do see Jedi Mickey come by!! However we did not see Mickey in the 5 minutes we were waiting. During Star Tours I was once again NOT the Rebel Spy. Haha.

After Star Tours, we were led to Backlot Express as it was time for our late lunch/early dinner. We had an entire reserved section of the dining space, and each table was marked with reserved. Oh and each customized nametag has a planet name on it, and I didn't realize it but we all had different planets. They acted like escort cards because the tables were labeled with these planets too. We got Takodana so we found that table and sat down. We also saw Tatooine, Bespin, etc. We were all given drink cups and could fill up at the drink stations as we pleased. I got an iced tea and DH got diet coke, which are our drinks of choice. It was nice to have a seat and put our feet up for a bit. We were standing for a good portion of the day even though we had done less walking that I thought we would. My phone was almost dying at this point so I hoped our food would come quickly so I could take a picture.
And indeed it arrived very quickly and was piping hot!

Then I went to plug my phone into the wall. The only space was next to our tour guide's tables, and they were so nice about letting me charge and leave my phone there.

Our dinner was good and hit the spot. I loved the Chicken n Waffles - I had them before during Rebel Hangar and enjoyed this dish there too. (I really think they should make Backlot Express permanently into Rebel Hangar, they did such a great job with it. See this post from our trip 2 years ago.) The Royal Guard burger was new for us as we have not tried it. We had something similar on the DCL Fantasy while on Star Wars Day at Sea last year - a "Bantha" burger, also served on the black bun. The Royal Guard burger had bbq brisket on it and was quite tasty. DH liked it a lot.

No dessert for us because we had a massive dessert party to go to later!

Coming up...Star Wars Meet n Greets, a Galactic Dessert Party and Star Wars Fireworks!

Calfan told me you were doing another trip report this time for the Princess at WDW. Enjoyed your DLR trip report so much had to come over and check it out. We don't go to WDW very often--west coasters who much prefer DLR--but the Star Wars tour will be on the list for DS20. He's a huge fan, and even from the first half of the day, I know he'd loved it. I'm also hoping to do the Princess half at some point. Looks like fun despite you guys not being 100%.

Love the dismeet picture! I am hoping to get to meet some people on my trip. It's during the 20th anniversary so I am sure I will. My DD will be so excited to meet Sorcorer Mickey. I didn't know that was a regular M&G now.

Thanks! It's a new M and G setup, we saw it for the first time in December. It replaces where Sorcerer mickey used to meet in Animation Academy which is now Star Wars Launch Bay. It's a really pretty set up inside.

Great part 1 update. So far I think my husband would love this tour

Thank you! If you're a Star Wars fan, you'll enjoy this tour. If you are not...then I'm not sure. Haha. There was a couple in our group and the guy was really into Star Wars and the girl was only doing the tour because of him. Think it was his b-day or something, LOL. She couldn't even name a favorite character because she didn't' know any! I don't know if she was bored during the tour but he sure looked like he was having fun.

My boyfriend would love this! Can I ask how much it cost?

Sure! It's 121.99 per adult. Think with tax was like 130 or so. It is WELL worth it IMO because the dessert party is already almost 70 bucks, plus you get popcorn and quick service dinner which is already worth like 20 bucks You get first dibs on everything, including being the first people to be let into the dessert party (even before people who just bought the dessert party), as well as first to enter the reserved fireworks viewing area. I highly recommend it. And it's the only way you can march with the First Order!

Thank you so much!! I think your son would love the tour. Everyone on the tour was definitely a fan, well minus the one girl who only came because of her boyfriend/spouse. Haha. But still, it is a great tour, very well organized and loved the VIP treatment we got for the rides we did go on and all the reserved seating and viewing areas. We also got to cut the line to meet Chewie and Kylo Ren. I will go over that in my next update.
The Princess half is such a popular race, and the whole weekend was a lot of fun despite the crowds. I think we just have to know what to expect during race weekends. I think Run Disney is definitely addictive. I've signed up for the Fall Feast 5k during Food and Wine half marathon weekend. I hope it's not as crazy crowded as Princess half!

I was expecting a lot worse price-wise. That doesn't sound bad at all for what you get! This is definitely on my to do list for the next time my family is at WDW. I'm not a Star Wars geek by any stretch of the imagination, but I've seen all the movies and am definitely into the whole Star Wars theming, etc. I'm a bit older than you, so I was 10 when the original Star Wars movie came out in 1977. I saw it five times in the theater with my Dad, and Star Wars definitely evokes a nice sense of nostalgia for me. It's amazing how long it has endured, plus the enthusiasm around the new movies creating new fans.

Oh my...I am just now getting over here and you are already on page 7???? Man, I am majorly late to the party...plus behind on your DLR report. Life needs to stop getting in the way of my Dis time! Okay, going back to read.....

Thank you! That's not bad at all. Like you said between the dessert party, dinner and snacks you're already at close to $100, so an extra $30 to get right on rides and the tour is a great deal. I'm wondering if they'll do something similar to this once Star Wars land opens.

The price was extremely reasonable for the experience especially because it included the dessert party and dinner (and popcorn!) as well. Plus it was like having a mini VIP tour, albeit for only a few rides, but I know those regular VIP tours cost a fortune. I think if you've watched all the movies and and enjoy Star Wars at the parks, this would be a fun and different way to experience it. By far the highlight was marching with the First Order.

Hi Renee! Happy to see you here! No worries, I wrote a lot of posts since we had a snow day Tuesday. I have a lot of catching up to do myself...including your PTR! :)

We had a really fun time. When I tell people it was 7 hours, they are like, WHAT 7 hours?!? What could you possibly do for 7 hours!?! But a lot of time is taken watching shows, plus the dessert party and fireworks are like an hour and a half plus another half hour for dinner, and there is some walking too, but not a ton. We didn't have to walk far though, the furthest distance was probably from Start Tours to Launch Bay. But we doubled back a lot depending on what was next on the agenda. If they do something like this when Star Wars land opens, then I will definitely sign up for it but I am sure it'll much more expensive!

Checking in from Disney wow you've been busy. Love all the updates. So excited to read about the Star Wars tour. We're hoping to do this for our November trip.

Wow, my husband would LOVE this tour!!

I love how in the second video you see a CM take her light saber and gently 'push' an onlooker BACK from where they came from :rotfl2:

Love your popcorn selfie :thumbsup2 I don't really understand it per say as I'm not quite as taken with the Disney popcorn as you are popcorn:: but hey, gotta love a woman who loves her snacks! The chicken and waffles is exactly what I would've ordered, too!

Looking forward to part of your tour!

Oh wow, the tour looked so fun! My son would have loved that. Alas poor kid only got the dessert party and we had to run to Jedi training with the rest of them. Lol. Next time!!!
