Hi, I was wondering if anyone has taken their own GPS instead of renting one with the car hire once we are there. I can purchase a USA map for our Tom Tom for USD$40 which is a lot cheaper than hiring one for our 11 day rental.

I think once I get my bearings I won't really need it all that much so if we can save money that would be great.

...But does it work?

It should.

My dad bought a navigator (no idea what brand!) and it came with a disc with a bunch if maps that you can load onto it.
Once I spent a few hours trying to work the damn thing, it was set to go.

He travelled Canada and it worked perfectly with the Canadian maps add on.

I bought the TOM TOM U.S app for my iPhone on my last trip. I think it costs $65, but I used discounted iTines cards so it was less 23%.

It worked a treat and the only time I got lost was when I put the wrong destination (goose!).

I will use it again next month !!!! BTW I loaded onto my wife's iPhone and my iPad as well as they all share the same Apple ID.

Thank you both so much - the app actually sounds like a good idea - I will have a look into it.

We always take our Tomtom GPS. Our trips have been every 2 years, so we purchase new maps to upload each time. Wouldn't be without it.

We purchased a Tom Tom as well with international maps to take with us. This will be the third trip using it. Works out a lot cheaper than renting one, F you do te one from home with international maps it will give ou a chance to practice with it enforce you go.

We bought a TomTom in walmart preloaded with maps and lifelong updates for 89.00 dollars. We did click and collect with paypal. It was cheaper to preorder it online about 5 days before we left. Now because we go every year we just take it with us. For us it just seemed easier than loading maps on a home one and cheaper than renting one. Hth.

We've driven through 26 states with our TomTom GPS - wouldn't drive anywhere without it anymore :thumbsup2
