Taking your Autistic child out of school for WDW trip?

HI
I TOOK MMY DOWNS SYNDROME/AUTISTIC SON OUT OF SCHOOL TO GO TO WDW WHEN HE WAS 7. IT WAS THE BEST THING I COULD HAVE DOONE FOR HIM. WHEN WE LEFT THE UK HIS SPEACH WAS POOR AND HE DID NOT INTERACT VERY WELL. ON OUR RETURN HE HAD SO MUCH TO SAY (IN HIS OWN WAY OF COURSE - HE USES MAKATON SIGN LANGUAGE) AND WAS SO EXCITED. WHILST WE WHERE THER ONE OF THE CHARACTERS (A CHIPMONK) SAT ON THE FLOOR WITH HIM AND USED MAKATON TO TALK TO HIM IT WAS SO WONDERFUL TO SEE HIM 'CHATTING' AND INTERACTING HE WAS SO FULL OF AWE AND EXCITEMENT. HIS SPECIAL SCHOOL AND PSYCHOLOGIST SAD IT HAS CHANGED HIM COMPLETELY. HE HAS STARTED TO STAGNATE DEVELOPMENTLY (HE IS NOW 14) SO I HAVE BOOKED FOR US TO GO AGAIN IN NOVEMBER HOPEFULLY IT WILL GIVE HIM A SPURT AGAIN.

ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY

Disney and a family farm were places we always pulled our DS out to go visit in off season.

School said he was so energized, more verbal and attentive after these trips.

They wanted to write in his IEP that he was required to take these trips !! ;)

We would still be doing it if my others weren't in middle & high, and unable to be pulled out.
WOW could we all do that? Make it a requirement that our childs get a school trip to WDW LOL.

I don't know why I am laughing with all the embezzlement and fraud going on in the LI school districts lately all the high up postions have vacations written into their contracts PAID BY THE DISTRICT! Why can't our kids get them obviously they are LEARNINg from them...

Sorry I got off point......It would be amazing to have in the IEP so they don't get grief for missing those days.

Today I talked to the woman responsible for signing DS's IEP every year...she wanted to schedule an interim IEP on Oct 15th to discuss goals...I said I couldn't be there, we were flying to Florida for a Disney cruise...she could not have been more supportive...well she did say I owed her one, needed to take her next time. DS attends an NPS, his attendance there costs the district a huge amount of money...but I think if you have a good team that know you and your child you can't go wrong in going on vacation. Anyone with compassion understands the issues, and they've seen the kids that are shunted into the group homes...they love hearing about my DS who is hitting the beach at Cozumel and loving the dining rooms at DCL.
