Taking our first 7-night cruise what to wear on formal night?

Taking our first 7-night cruise and I'm wondering what to wear on formal night. I would love to hear what you have worn.

Admittedly, we did not dress up on formal night. Looking back on it, we kind of wish we had. It would have been nice to have a picture of the family with us all dressed up.

That said, people were all across the board in what they chose to wear. Most women were in dresses (cocktail type) and most men were in sportcoats and jackets, mostly with ties. We did see a few folks in their tuxedos and more evening gown-styles. Mickey and Minnie both get quite dressed up, so it's fun to think about taking a formal picture with them if you have the opportunity!

We went all out, tux for DH and gown for me, tiara of course! We were definitely in the minority but didn't mind at all. People wear jeans to gowns, whatever you want.

DW will wear a Dress, I will wear a dress shirt and tie with slacks.

I have rented a tux on longer (12+ nights) cruises.

I brought my suit once - and that's not happening again!! Too much room in my luggage when coming from the west coast.

Anything longer than 7 nights, my DH rents a tux. It's great because they deliver it right to the ship. Otherwise he brings along a suit or two. I wear either a cocktail dress or floor length dress - usually one of the flashier ones but not something that I would consider a 'gown'. ie. Nothing that wrinkles horribly. But, DH and I are folks who are used to wearing business suits to the office every day and formal engagements are part of the job so we don't think twice about formal wear for a cruise. As PP have said, wear what you are comfortable with. No matter what you choose, you will be in good company.

I do a dress and my husband a suit.
He throws the suit in his suitcase and we just sent it out to be pressed when we board.
I love the chance for us to "dress up".

I agree with the suit, I can't see where we would find the room for it or a long formal dress for me.

My husband found a light sport jacket that took up little space. So no full suit. We also both dress up when we "do dinner". We fancy.

We go in May...wondering the same thing. I'll have to get something nice for my son to wear! He doesn't dress up quite as often as my daughter likes to, she loves wearing dresses.

I wore a chiffon floral dress, t length. I had a wrap and I have a Disney Swarovski Castle pin to hold it in place. It's really up to you. Some people go all out in gowns and tuxes and I even saw some with sneakers! For me, I don't have a gown in my closet and I wasn't going to buy one just for a cruise. I prefer something that I already have or can wear again.

We really got the message about how Disney feels about formal night on our last cruise. Well, technically they called it a dress up night (or something like that) as it was only a 5 nighter. But it was on the same night as the Halloween activities, so the navigator recommended either dress up or Halloween apparel. . We just punted and went the khaki route.

But as to your actual question, we used to really dress up but now I just wear a dress - usually something knit that I can roll up in the suitcase and not worry about wrinkles. The guys have revolted and refuse to pack sport coats or suits anymore, but will suffer through nice pants and a dress shirt, and sometimes a tie.

I affectionately call those "throw and go dresses" perfect for vacation.

As has been said - clothes. Period. Not swimwear. Not tank tops. And please not pajamas unless it is the final morning and you packed all your clothes.

But beyond that, don't stress it. It is not a requirement to dress formally.

I wear an Aloha shirt, shorts and flip flops, which is my standard clothing on any night. I don't like to get dressed up for formal night. We didn't even do it on our Princess cruise and wound up eating in the bar instead, which turned out to be better food than the MDR we were assigned to.

On our cruise last July, all of us guys wore dockers and a nice golf polo shirt and were with about 70% of the other men on formal night.
