Taking Grandma to Meet Mickey---3/11 thru 3/18 at VWL***New PART 6 Page 3 Post 33*

Great report-you had me laughing with your medicine technique. My oldest will be 24 yrs old in June. Why is this relevant-because 22 years ago, all asthma medicine was liquid, including the steroid. He would not swallow pills. I swear, I would just touch his lips and the medicine came flying back at me. We ended up in the hospital so much, because he would never take the medicine.

Well, enough about that. I really, really want to stay at the Wilderness Lodge next April for Easter. My dd will be marching with her band at the MK, I don't know what day yet, so we don't know if we want to go many days before or after.

Thanks for sharing your report. Is grandma, your mom or mil?

Excellent start ~ Can't wait to read more.

Thank you, Minniepal, BlueBayou, KimmieLee, and JoAnn for reading! :thumbsup2

OhMari and Pumba---I'm glad someone can relate to the joys of giving medicine to kids!

HaleyB--the toilet seat question was one of MANY that DS7 can ask and my answer is "I really don't know the answer to that". We did ask a Flight Attendant and she said it is no. So, note to self---be sure to NOT be in the bathroom in the event of an "emergency landing on water". :confused3

And another Texan has stopped by---Hi, Dustmouse :wave2:

And to OhMari---Grandma is my MOM :lovestruc who is the most patient, caring, positive person I have ever known---except maybe for HER mom---the GreatGrandma.

on with the show:

Part IV: Grandma's First Day at the Parks (Sunday March 12)

I never mentioned that our rooms looked great---everything clean and Mousekeeping had left a Towel Mickey on one of the beds. I didn't bring a UV light to check for spots or body fluids---thanks, 20/20 for trying to turn me into a Germaphobe. As a mom who survived potty training two BOYS, I do understand how body fluids can get on everything---comforters, walls, floors, sofas, chairs, even CEILINGS. Thank goodness 20/20 hasn't brought a UV light into our home.

Everyone slept soundly, except ME!!! I can never sleep the first night at WDW---too much adrenaline flowing. I mentally go over our itinerary umpteen times. Do we have enough ADR's? At the right restaurants? On the right days? Should we really go to AK on our first day? We always go to MK first! But Tour Guide Mike says to avoid MK today, as does Touringplans.com. Okay, okay---we will stick with the Plan and trust the "all-knowing" ones.

I manage to sleep 3 hours or so before Mickey calls at 6:00am. Florida time. Rally the troops and finish repacking. We are checking OUT of WL and IN to our S-P-A-C-I-O-U-S 2 bedroom at the Villas of WL. I confess. Since our DVC purchase 3 years ago, I am now a DVC snob. I cannot, and WILL not, put our family of 5 into one hotel room again. I NEED space. I NEED a separate Living Area. I NEED a washer and dryer. I NEED a full-size refrigerator and a microwave. I NEED 3 TV's and 2 Bathrooms. Yes, I am now so spoiled that we get two connecting rooms at any "normal" hotel we stay in. Unless DH manages to get one room to himself

I get the three kiddos dressed and head downstairs to check into VWL. There is no line at 6:15 am. I tell the CM that I am checking in so early in hopes of scoring the BESTEST room EVER at VWL. She laughs and says all of our requests have been met (nonsmoking--DS4 has asthma---and nonhandicapped---my 2 DS's would surely flood the entire VWL with a walk-in doorless shower). She also says we have a GREAT view---woo-hoo---and gives me the call-back card along with all of our keys.

Next I go to Roaring Forks to buy a Disney-priced breakfast---bagels, donuts, fruit, milk, 2 Coffees for DH, diet Coke for me and Grandma---we hate coffee! This was around $30. Luckily we won't buy breakfast again. I have a grocery delivery coming to the Villa tonight. And a surprise basket from Feralpeg---peggysweetsandmore.com. There is a short line at Roaring Forks with one VERY slow cashier. And a few VERY slow customers. I found this trip that the Dining Plan option combined with the Room Charge option was just too much for many guests to keep straight. At every snack bar or counterservice check out the conversations went something like this:

(CM totals food---Guests hands over Key to the World card)

CM: "Dining plan or charge to the room?"

Guest: "Huh? What do you mean?"

CM: "Do you have the dining plan or do you want to charge it to your room?"

Guest: "Oh. I have the dining plan. What can go on the dining plan?" while eyeing tray full of food.

CM: "Well, your sandwiches and fruit and drinks can count as your Counter Service credit. But the extra bagel you will have to pay for or do a room charge"

Guest: "Okay. How many counter service credits do I have left?"

And on. And on. Ugh.

I get the food upstairs and call bell services to pick up and store our bags for the day. DH keeps asking WHY we are doing this. Why didn't we just check in to VWL in the first place? Because A--it would eat up 75 points of our precious point allotment which equals to $750 that I could rent those points for (or $900 is I followed the advice of the rent-only-at-$12 per point and quit driving down DVC point value threads) and B---The DVC board is full of horrible late check-in stories and we didn't arrive til after dark last night. Luckily, before I have to explain all of this, bell services arrives. He loads up the luggage. We tip him $20---it's ALOT of luggage. And we would like to see it ALL again.

We now head downstairs to catch the AK bus. With 3 kids. And Grandma. And the double stroller. And a very stuffed backpack. And a small icechest.

We make it and see lots of people waiting for the Epcot, MK and MGM busses, but only 2 other families waiting for the AK bus. Woo Hoo! The All-Knowing Ones were right!!! I know that a fellow DISer is also going to AK today. And staying at the VWL. And celebrating her 14th anniversary, as are my DH and I. So I am convinced this one family is hers. But I'm shy. And don't like to embarrass myself. But I have no problems with embarrassing DH. So I whisper to him---

"Go ask her if she is "Canwegosoon"."

DH: "HUH?"

Me: "From the DISney message boards. That's her screenname. She's supposed to be going to AK today."

DH: "You mean one of your computer friends?" (rolling eyes) "You ask her."

Me: "But you know how shy I am. Please??? I know that's her! She looks about my age and they are on their anniversary trip, too" (batting eyes)

DH caves. And asks. And she must be shy, too. Because her DH answers for her. No, she is NOT Canwegosoon. But she can be if it will get them special privileges or something. HAH!!! Not a DISer, but a funny family. I find out later that poor Canwegosoon was still upstairs with very sore feet and could not get Bell Services to pick up their bags. I feel somewhat responsible. Mr. Bellman CM may have been tied up unloading our hoards of bags. Or gone to buy breakfast at Roaring Forks with the generous tip we gave him. Oh, wait. We're at DISNEY. That tip will only buy him 1/2 of a breakfast. Anyway, sorry we missed you Canwegosoon. :wave2:

We arrive at AK and walk the 5 miles from the busdrop off to the gates. The kids are excited. We are excited. Grandma has no idea what to expect, but she is excited, too. Along with 1000 other people who are already here and it is 20 minutes til opening.

We enter the gates and are squashed in the middle of a MOB of people watching the opening. And when the rope drops, we head to. . . where else??? Expedition Everest!!! Through the Dinoland shortcut thanks to the advice of experienced EE DISers. Grandma will LOVE it. We think. And if she doesn't she will still PRETEND like she did. Because she is always so positive. And trusting. She follows us and hops on EE not really knowing WHAT she is about to ride. :rolleyes1

And the Disney magic begins for Grandma. Zooming down a mountain. Backwards. With a Giant Yeti on your tail. In the dark. :thumbsup2

I am so smiling here.....I can see your ma going backwards down EE......WELL NOT ME.......rofl...
Thanks so much for reminding me of the time I saw GREEN.......Lime Green that is and I am wicked shy and I mosey on up to this lady and she was a diser.....Myhusband kept on walking.....he rolls his eyes too......what fun we would have being in Disney together...let the DH's roll their eyes ....rofl :goodvibes

My family is having a great time reading your trip report!

We are also taking Grandma and Papa this year! My brother, his wife and there 3 kids too!

Cant wait to read more!

:lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: Oh my gosh... ok, here's me on Friday morning getting ready for work.... in the house we are living in, the toilet is right smack dab next to the vanity where I get ready. DS(6) was in the shower and decides he has to potty. So, I fight the urge to tell him to do it in the shower because I know eventually, he's going to do that anyway.... but hey, I do the right thing and put a towel down for him to drip on, while standing at the commode. Ha... soon, I feel my newly showered, barely dry foot get SPLASHED with "something". EEEEWWWWW... dare I look? He missed the toilet "hole" and hit the back, which splashed on the floor and was a direct hit to my FOOT!!!!

I went to work and NO ONE I work with has boys and they couldn't even begin to fathom how that could happen. Thank you for making me feel like my DS is, after all, just that... a darling son that has no aim!!! :rolleyes1

However... :offtopic: so back to our regularly scheduled trip report! I want to hear how Grandma did on EE!!!

Great report so far!

I also know what you mean about the messy little boys. We're potty training my two year old brother now (what fun!). I wish I could stop watching those 20/20 shows, but my DH actually works for ABC News, so he always ropes me into watching them!

OMG, I just realized I'm actually wearing his 20/20 hat! :rotfl2:

I am enjoying reading your trip report, especially to see how Grandma fairs. We had planned to take my mother-in-law with us when we went back in May but she couldn't go after all. She definitely would not have been the type to try EE but she certainly would have tried other things.

JesseTheCowgirl...VERY cute reports...I was hoping you would take the tickets...but know with kids that would have been hard. MY DH/DS flight home was totally booked, and had to leave a standby behind. Can we plan a trip together??? I will be there for 12/23-12/29 Come on over!!!.

The Morning of the 12th I was still at BCV and having those problems with Bell Services...and of course with your own washer/dryer you missed the FLOOD!!! :thumbsup2 But I bet our paths crossed and we didn't know it. On Tues a mid 30's lady come up to me at the pool and she had I son- I woud guess to be 5...she said it must be nice to have 2 to play with each other(so I figured it wasn't you).

I am waiting for report about your anniversary dinner!!! :confused3
Terri

LauraAnn630---Lucky you! To have your parents AND your brother's family. That would be my ultimate Disney Dream!

KimmieLee---LOL! No one tells you about the GETTING PEED ON part of parenting, do they??

GinaMarie---ABC news?? EEEK!!! You do have a rule about no hidden cameras in your house or car, I hope?? ;)

mdsouth---The secret to getting a grandma on EE is keeping it a surprise. :rolleyes1

Terri/Canwegosoon---I would LOVE to go in December. Unfortunately, that doesn't work well with our schedule, but we are plannin on Spring Break again in 2007.

************on with our AK day, March 12*****************

Part V

As we're heading to EE with my loving, trusting, smiling, mom (who is fiftysomething and NOT what you would call a daredevil), we feel compelled to tell her a little about what she is about to ride. Because we love her. And we love WDW. And we want HER to love WDW. And a surprise backwards trip down a mountain while being chased by a monster in the dark just MIGHT scare her off from trusting us anymore.

So we tell her what it's like. DS7 quotes the WDW Top 7 Attractions spiel. Verbatim. Because he watched it at least 20 times before drifting off the sleep in his WL bed. Only we don't REALLY know what it's like because none of us have ridden it, either.

Grandma listens to the spiel. She eyes the mountain. She ponders. Then she tells us she is . . . IN for the ride. :woohoo: DH, Grandma, and DS7 ride first and get a babyswap for later. I take DS4 and DD2 to get fastpasses for the Safari and wait on the Expeditioners.

While we wait, I am still a little nervous about Grandma. You see, I am thinking about the OTHER Grandma trip. That preceded this one. With our kiddos other Grandma---my MIL. One year prior. That ended in disaster. Not TOTAL disaster, but let's just say that Other Grandma will not ever willingly travel with us again. Nor will she travel to WDW again. I can't say she HATED her trip, but she didn't necessarily LIKE it, either. Too much walking. And maybe too much togetherness. And maybe too much time with noisy kids (those would be OUR noisy kids). And too crowded. WDW just wasn't the ideal vacation spot for her. Don't get me wrong---we love her, she loves us, but she did not love her trip.

20 minutes later, the 3 Expeditioners arrive. And they are---SMILING. Even Grandma. She survived. And enjoyed it, she says. But didn't see the Yeti, since her eyes were closed the entire time. DS7 and DH gave it a big :thumbsup2 and I will get my turn later.

Our plan now is to ride the Safari, see the Lion King show, eat lunch at Flame Tree BBQ, and let ME ride EE with our babyswap ticket. Which means our fearless DS7 gets to ride TWICE. I don't plan anything else at AK so we don't exhaust Grandma on our first park day!

I am trying harder this trip with Grandma #2 to not overdo it. Because I do go into Disney Hyperdrive on our vacations sometimes. And I really want this trip to be special for Grandma. She would have loved to have gone to Disneyland as a little girl. But that didn't happen. She would have loved to have brought ME to WDW as a little girl. But that didn't happen. So this is it! The trip SHE never had; the trip WE never had. At that Most Magical Place.

***************to be continued***********************

 Loving your trip report! Can't wait for more excitement!

Thanks for the encouragement!! on with our AK day

*****************Part 6 AK day cont'd*********************

Review of our cast---Me 30something; DH 37; my Mom fiftysomething; DS7; DS4; and DD2 (almost)

Next we took Grandma on her first Safari and then off to the Lion King show. The safari was great as usual---love, love the Baby Elephants!!! DS7 was so excited to be snapping away on his new digital camera. I knew it was supposed to hold just under 100 pictures. He had been taking pictures of EVERYTHING---starting at the airport. So I was beginning to wonder how many he had left? Anyhoo---he takes at least 3 pics of each animal we see and is just SO PROUD of himself for having his own camera.

Grandma was amazed by the safari. The pixie dust was definitely in the air. Perfect weather, everyone having fun, and a little Disney Magic.

After the safari, we head to the Lion King show, thinking we are too late for the one that starts in less than 7 minutes. But SURPRISE!!!! There are CM's calling people in at the last minute. Which did mean we were in the nosebleed section. I have never sat that far up, and even though we loved the show I do think seating makes a difference. From so far back the show just didn't have the WOW factor it usually does for me. Or for DS4---he was squirming when usually he is MESMERIZED by this show.

Also, Mr. Lion King African Chief was not played by the usual one. I know, one person can't possibly be in EVERY show, EVERY day. But we have seen our Chief in the last 2 shows. And on the Christmas Parade on ABC. And so he IS the Chief in our eyes. Tall. Muscular. Regal. Commands respect. And the one playing Chief this time was much shorter, rounder, and looked more like the Tribal Clown to me. It just didn't feel right. Picture George from Seinfeld trying to play Braveheart. I'm not buying it.

But Grandma had never seen any other chief, and she did love the show. The bird was also not flying, but was grounded and danced instead. I guess there had been a flying accident of some sort???

Lunch at Flame Tree was one of our best all week. Some of us had ribs; some had the chicken; I had the salad. All good. And we had to get dessert since we were on the Meal Plan just for today. We ended up giving away 2 frozen lemonades---that was just way too much food.

The younger kids played in the Boneyard next while I took DS7 to EE with our babyswap pass. That meant one other adult could ride, so we offered it to Grandma, not thinking she would dare ride EE twice!!! BUT. . . .surprising us all . . . she wanted to go again!!! Maybe Grandma IS a daredevil and we just never knew it???

I did buy the EE ride picture. How could I not??? Grandma is sitting with DS7 and I'm behind them. And everyone is actually SMILING. Great ride. The imagineers really outdid themselves. It looked just like Tibet. I think. I've never actually been to Tibet ;)

At around 1:30 we decide to head back to VWL in hopes that our room might be ready. I'm hoping it is. And that we can get our luggage. Because we have a dinner date with Prince Charming at 1900PF.

More great reports...I wanted to tell you we had the "regular" Chief at the 3pm show, and the bird also did not fly. That is so funny we were at the same shows on the same day(just different times)...we also were in the nose bleed section :cloud9:

Loving your report JessetheCowgirl :goodvibes My parents actually run for the hills when we even approach the subject of their visiting us at our home away from home :lmao: as they don't understand the magic :wizard: I can't get mom on anything faster than It's A Small Word :confused3

I'm loving your trip report. That was funny about your dh having his own room and not having to watch the kids while on the plane. You know, my dh would respond a lot like that if I told him that one of our kids had to go to the bathroom.
Can't wait for the next installment. :goodvibes

From one 'girl' to another, I so get this. We have only had the honor of the regal cheif and he is amazing. I would be disappointed by having to watch 'george' too. But that is what makes the chief so special. His charisma, his presence, his magnificence. That man is amazing and is for me the hightlight of the show, although I do like the bizarre little acrobat monkeys too.....

Keep writing. I love your observations, you cowgirl you. :yay:

Somehow I missed your TR till today. It is fantastic.

I remember when I took my mother to WDW for the first time. She loved it to and was game for anything. That was in 1986. We just went back this past August, myself, my mom, dd(24) and DGD(4). I can put myself right into your trip when you speak of your mom & kids interacting. :grouphug:
My Mom isn't quite up to the thrill rides anymore, but she still had a great time.

Can't wait to read more. The 60 minutes thing had me cracking up. We all think about that ultraviolet light stuff now. :lmao:
