I had a tax question before we start this years taxes. Last spring daughter in law left my son and grandson. She is on disability (mental health long term disab.) and no earned income. Only the last few months of the year did she provide a nominal amount of child support. lets call it $300 being generious for the last three months of 2010. She left in May. '
DS income was a settlement they lived on and when it ran out, and his surgery did not work, she left.
I have had to maintain the home (lease), rent, utilities, one credit card minimal payment, paid off the car so no payment there. All medicaitons, food, TP, etc.
We are trying to finish ourhome for them to move back.
Finally last month ds was provided a medical card and food stamps, no cash.
So can I claim the more then half their support? DH and I are working all the hrs we can pick up to keep the roof over their head. Hoping his SSD comes through but he had two denials already.
(By the way, this made us inelg for UC fed claim ext of his $440 a week, down to state funds of $60 a week. He made more the $800 for the quarter so we lost his ext of full amount.....He never worked a full time week, as need call basis about $68 a week.
I hope by the end of Feb for them to move back. Bilevel downstairs being finished into two bedrooms.
I know the earned Income credit is for those that live in your home more them 1/2 the year. But not sure of the standard to claim dependant for caring, even adult disabled children.
This is a permanant disability, the best thing for them is to have support until plan B can be considered.
I am on disability but work what I can to help keep a roof over them during the unexpected loss of family unit.

Hoped I did not confuse.....but need all the help we can get to keep our own home and care for ds and grandson.
