I will be in San Francisco for a convention in April. I will be flying out early Tuesday morning from Oakland, staying at the Palace. I know the Palace is at the Montgomery St/Market Street station, and BART only has the trip as about 20 minutes.

I am a female, travelling alone with one mid-sized suitcase. Would you take BART at 5:30 am alone with your suitcase, or would you take a cab??

As a matter of cost, I would definitely take BART. From my experience, there are not too many people out early in the AM, and we've taken BART as early as 6 AM. Plan on finding the station during your stay and find the shortest way to get there and you should be fine.

You can get BART tickets from their website, so you don't have to try and decipher their ticket machines. Really convenient...2 to 3 days in the mail and no exhorbitant service charge. You do need to be aware that you have to take a shuttle bus from the Oakland Coliseum to OAK, but that always seems to run smooth...they are usually waiting when the train arrives.

BART is fine. I find there are many business travelers going to OAK at that hour.

Buy your BART ticket a day or two before from a station clerk, and get a separate ticket for the AirBART bus. (You don't want to show up early in the morning and find the ticket machines out of order, and the ticket booth unstaffed.)
