Take son out of school? What would you do?

I'll just jump in again - please realize it is not the schools that are telling you your child must attend, it is the laws of your state and federal government. They are called compulsory attendance laws and the schools don't just uphold them to be mean - they are doing their jobs! If you have issues with attendance laws you should write your legislators or try home school or private schools.

I do understand it's the state/federal laws. But why is it that some schools are really hard on those kids taking vacation time and others aren't. Same state laws. If I want to take my child out for several days, then maybe I should just say that child was home with a high fever/sore throat. There are plenty of kids that miss up to 2 weeks of school due to illness. In our case, this doesn't happen. We are lucky enough to have a dd who rarely gets ill enough to miss school. But, when we do take her out, it wouldn't be for more than 5 days, more often it's just 3 days. 3 days is the most she has missed for vacation time since kindergarten. I still have no problem with taking my dd out of school for special vacations...she makes up the work when she gets home. And does some extra stuff while we are away. Maybe it's time for the states to adopt a 'personnal days' type thing. The kids could use them for vacation or illness...just like adults in the workplace.

Also every year we take our kid out we let the teache know at the beginning at the meet ang greet....We will also send a note about a month of head of time to remind the teacher of our plans...we have yet to have a teacher object....so far its been go and have a great time he is a good student and will have no problem catching up....Last year he was told to write a paragraph about his events....Plus we always bring the teacher a little something....I think in Dec. also the actual class work is winding down and not a whole lot of new stuff is taught till the new year....
