alternate source of cooking, (small portable gas grill that can be used outside?)

vented porch with a space heater?, wood burning emergency stove installed? Generator? (portable or fixed)

ten day supply of non-perishable food for all in the household, plus two or four extra persons? a few containers of potable water?

Mostly you have to be prepared mentally to know that it is a survivable situation, maybe uncomfortable, but survivable.

later...

I should have more can food on hand during the winter storm months. I don't even have a 10 day supply of regular every day food. :rotfl2: I'm still hoping to have a generator someday. That would be great. I envy the neighbors with their generators when we are out of power. Ohhh the luxury of a flush toilet. :lmao: We were 12 days without power and water once after a record ice storm. We used our camping cookstove to heat can soup/beans. Snowmobiles were used as transportation the 1st few days. Many roads were not passable. YIKES, I hope we don't ever have another storm like that one.

It's raining so hard here it looks like it's going to flood! :scared:

Start getting all the animals two by two and building an ark! ;)

I am never as prepared for hurricane season as I should be. I think the fact my area has never had a direct hit has made me complacent.

And thanks LegoMom for getting "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" stuck in my head. :lmao: I wonder if my 2 year old will think that's a good lullaby tonight?

At this point I expect our district to remain closed right through the end of the Christmas/New Year's break. They haven't officially announced it yet, but three other nearby districts have, and really there's no way they can hope to open anytime soon. One of the two middle schools is currently being used as a shelter, many, many back roads are still blocked, and most towns in our district are still without power!

Crazy.

So how's the rental hunt coming along?

Oh just swimmingly if I could ever get out of HERE!!! We haven't even been able to get the house on the market, because 2 days after our agent was here last week, we got covered in ice. That's just the last thing on anybody's mind right now, sadly.

I find rentals every day that I just drool over.....:cloud9:

Our school district finally made the official annoucement: closed until January 5th! Wow that's some Christmas break! If my kids were still going to be here, they'd be in for a loooong school year. Transferring will greatlly benefit them in that respect! (and if it's somewhere in FL, they get to look forward to getting out in May, which will just freak them right out...).

We just got back from going out to our favorite nearby pizza place. It was nice to have a hot meal!!

I'm finally feeling better today and have my energy back. Still coughing and I've lost my voice, but I managed to get all the kid's presents wrapped!

Yeah, I hear we have a few storms coming up.

Yep. Tomorrow, then Sunday, and I've heard they're watching one for around next Wednesday, too. That being Christmas Eve, I've gotta watch it carefully because it could determine the timing of getting to BIL's house.

Oy.

I would prefer the lakes freeze before getting all this snow. Don't want a blanket of insulation on thin ice.

Many Florida schools (like ours) have shifted the schedule to get out in mid-June. Too many parents were complaining about starting school so early. Now we start towards the end of August and get out mid-June. Some people still want to shift to start after Labor day, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

Glad you are feeling better!

Hope everyone is doing well. My husband and I are off soon to go finish shopping. Snow storm coming tomorrow and Monday. We leave tomorrow for a week. My husband will be back Tues to pick up the kids. I may be back for a funeral. Just found out a friend was found about an hour ago dead in a snowbank outside his house. Things keep getting more depressing around here. Last weekend a 19 year old girl was killed in a car accident. She graduated 2 years ago so my daugter knew her. It is very unfortunate that her brother died a few years ago and now those poor people don't have any children left. 2 weeks ago my daughters friend, another Senior was in a serious car accident and is fighting for her life in Boston. 60% of her body is burned. She is on a ventilator and will lose both feet. 1 leg may be amputated above the knee. They are hoping she can keep her thumbs but her fingers are not looking good. She is still in serious condition. Hmmmm, what's next?
