I am rather confused if I should get a TIW card or not. I am going on a solo trip this April, but my nephew may be eating some meals with me. He will be at the parks with his school orchestra, but he already told me they are fine with him eating with me if I am in the same park.

My AP expires this July, so I would only be using the TIW card this one trip.

I figure if it is just me eating sit down meals the card will not be worth it. But if my nephew joins me, it may be. Problem is, they still don't have a set itinerary, so all of my ADRs are just guesses right now. Is the card something I can just pick up at Disney World once I know for sure what is going on, or do I have to order it ahead of time?

You can get it at Guest Relations while you're there - no need to order ahead of time.

As the previous poster said, you can get one at any Guest Relations in the parks or Downtown Disney. You will need to show your annual pass. The cost is $75 and the card will be good for at least 12 months. (In some cases, it is good for part of that month, plus the next 12 months. For example, I got mine on Jan 24 and it will not expire until Feb 28.)

I am not sure if meant that this will be your only trip for the entire year or not, but you might consider that you do not even break even on the cost of the card until you spend $375 on meals. From that point on, the card begins saving you money.

I purchased one because of my trip last month, again in May and possibly again in November -- so figured I would recoup my $75.

And don't forget the discounts you get at some of the places in DTD. If I remember right, you get one at World of Disney (10%).

If you use the discounts, you break even sooner.

There aren't any merchandise discounts for having a TiW card. There are, however, discounts for having an Annual Pass as some locations, and you need an AP to get the TiW card.

No merchandise discounts, but TIW will get you free valet parking at the resorts if you visit a restaurant there.

So the TIW card doesn't expire at the same time as your AP? If that is so, then maybe I will get one, as I do plan on taking a short trip in December.
