Tables in Wonderland. . . To buy or not to buy?

We've gone several times using the DDP and have made out due to childrens ages. But our DD will be a disney adult this year and now I am trying to work the numbers so I want to make sure I use correct numbers.

I know TIW gets you 20% off entire bill,my questions:

1. Is the gratuity still from original total?

2. I assume you are only taxed on the discounted bill?

Thanks for your assistance. Just want to confirm I'm using correct numbers

Just came back from a Christmas trip for 5 days at Bay Lake. Purchased a TIW card after reading posts on Disboards. We have always went with the DDP before this trip. I kept detailed cost sheet on Excel...first of all, we like others do not usually order individual deserts, we share an appetizer from time to time etc. We saved over $300 over the DDP for six of us after the $75 cost. In addition the TIW card is good for $13 months for those who make more than one trip to WDW each year. We were well pleased with our decision to purchase the TIW over the DDP.

My AP will expire before my TIW card. We might not renew our AP. Could we still use our TIW until it expires or do you need to also have an active AP? Thanks!

You only need an active AP to purchase the TiW card. You can continue to use the TiW card until it expires.

I am having a hard time justifying the TIW card for just two people. $75 is a lot of money i could otherwise use at a CS. We don't eat table service every night. We also don't usually have more than one drink with dinner.

DW and I save $30 - $40 per trip using the TIW. We only do one fancy meal a day using the TIW card. With use of our DVC room facilities, we're averaging $350 a 5 day trip on food for the 2 of us.

For use, the best part of TIW is the elimination of mental anxiety over dining costs. We know up front that gratuity is included, our alcohol is included, and we are getting a good discount - no need for any additional brain cell work! If we were only to break even on the $75 cost, we would still be way ahead on the overall enjoyment factor of our vacations, however I expect to save up to $300 by the ed of this cycle's TIW use.

I also save a few dollars on the tip because I always tip 20% of the total bill, tax included, at Disney or elsewhere unless the service is horrible. When they calculate the tip, it's 18% on food and drinks only.

We were in the same situation and bought a new TiW card just before APs expired so we would continue to have the dining discount even though we won't renew our APs until next Dec.

Thanks for the comment. Since we are planning 3 5 day trips in one year, it would be easier to order what we want with the TIW card. Sounds like we would save.

I like the thought of purchasing another TIW card near the end of our annual pass. Is it possible to do if it's not expired?

We just did it. I thought we'd have to get the new card in DH's name since current card is in my name but they let me put my name on it no questions asked.

We just got a TIW last trip and we love it ...

Does anyone know if the Rose and Crown Pub (Pub only not the rest.) is covered?

The list of the Epcot locations has it as Rose & Crown Pub & Dining Room. That would lead me to believe that you can use it at either portion.

We had the DGC last week while their parents were at the CP dinner and show. For dinner, we took them to the food court at Pop. TiW card is accepted there, and with all the choices of food, everyone was happy! Another reason that we enjoy the TiW!

I will tell you I have done every calculation in the book when it comes to eating at DisneyWorld.

I estimated costs with the Dining Plan, with OOP costs, with the TiW, combinations of all three and in the end it was worth it to us. We were there for 23 days this past summer and we had the regular Dining Plan and used our TiW card for appetizers and drink purchases and it was awesome. Granted it was a ton of food, but when we go to Disney we are crazy eaters and enjoy booking our rezzies asap.

I found it was worth it to just not have to worry about anything and cover all bases and in the end it worked out well.

We have done the same thing and found the same results! :thumbsup2

Can anyone tell me if you can purchase the TIW card in DTD? We are headed to Old Key West in a couple of weeks and am not sure if we will be headed to a park on the first day but have an ADR. Thanks!

Yes, at DTD Guest Relations.

So, just to clarify--if we get the DDP and we have a TIW card, can we use the TIW on the portion of the meal the DDP doesn't cover (like liquor and appetizers)? thanks!

If the location offers the TiW discount, yes.

So can you still make reservations 180 days out on TIW if you are staying on prop or do you have to have DDP for that? Also is there any restrictions on the dinner shows eg. hoop dee do, etc?
