I heard this on my local news station that my city is putting in a bid for the 2020 games! :cool1: It would be cool, but I don't know. We're up against some real heavy hitters. Still, the fact that we're even being considered speaks volumes! :goodvibes

Hi Neighbor:wave2:

I heard that this morning too but I'm pretty skeptical about it happening. Although I think I heard the BOK center was like #9 on some entertainment venue list thing too so who knows?

I hadn't heard that..... what other cities are in the running?

Wow! That's a huge resposibility for a town/city to take on. Good luck!

That would be amazing, wouldn't it?? But, what an undertaking it would be! There would have to be a huge outdoor arena built to house the opening/closing ceremonies and track and field, and also probably a swim complex. I just think about all the people who were opposed to the BOK and wonder how that would go over with them.;)

I think it would be great, though. Our beautiful and gracious city would make us all proud, I'm sure!

I don't think it'll happpen. Public transportation is a big component of getting the games. Oklahoma is so spread out and we ranked like 48th in public transportation. The cost to shuttle everyone would be ridiculus, the city would go broke trying to make it work.

The fact that Oklahoma City got to be a official training center is a step in the right direction, but I'm just not sure even 12 years is long enough to put all the components in place.

No disrespect, but Tulsa? Seriously? I have to go to Tulsa a few times every year for business and it is ia DEAD city with no significant sports venue. How could it host the Olympics? :confused3

Well, no disrespect to you, but I would hardly consider Tulsa DEAD, in spite of the fact there is no significant outdoor sports venue (The BOK Center, with it's 19,199 seats would certainly qualify for a significant indoor sports venue.) Case in point:

Tulsa’s BOK Center moves up the charts
BY BRIAN BARBER - Tulsa World
Published: July 14, 2009
TULSA — Tulsa’s BOK Center is ranked No. 9 in the United States and No 23 in the world by Pollstar magazine for the number of tickets sold during the first half of 2009.

From January through June, the new venue hosted events with 188,688 tickets sold for events considered in the rankings, which do not include home athletic events.

BOK Center General Manager John Bolton said people would not expect Tulsa’s arena to be performing as well as it is because of the size of the population, saying the top 10 is dominated by major metropolitan areas.

"But one, this is a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility, and two, our economy is stronger than in many areas of the country,” he said. "Acts are also excited to tap into a new market that has responded extremely well.”

The ranking by Pollstar, which is the concert industry’s trade publication, bolsters the BOK Center’s reputation, Bolton said.

"It captures the attention of promoters, agents and act managers,” he said.

The American venues above the BOK Center on the Top 50 list are Philips Arena, Atlanta; Allstate Arena, Rosemont, Ill.; BankAtlantic Center, Sunrise, Fla.; Sprint Center, Kansas City, Mo.; St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa, Fla.; Madison Square Garden, New York; Toyota Center, Houston; and the Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, Conn.

Oklahoma City’s Ford Center landed at 48th in the country and 93rd in the world. The venue closed at the end of April for renovations. It will reopen in October.

The BOK Center has hosted or is scheduled to host nine of the Top 10 tours this year: Britney Spears, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John and Billy Joel, the Eagles, Celine Dion, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Chesney, Dave Matthews Band and Dane Cook.

While I agree that hosting the Olympics is a pretty far-fetched idea, and concede that Tulsa is no Dallas, LA, or Chicago, as a devoted Tulsan, I have to tell you that with the BOK Center, the Brady, SoBo, and Blue Dome Districts, the new Hard Rock and River Spirit casinos, existing and future dining and retail development along the Arkansas River, a world-class Ballet company, a first rate perfoming arts center, and many more things than I can list, this is hardly a "dead" city. Best of all, the people here are friendly, kind, and gracious, and I admire those citizens who have the drive and ingenuity to even try to attempt the seemngly impossible, like bringing the Olympic games to Oklahoma. Those two things together make it a wonderful place to live and raise a family and I wouldn't trade it for the world.:cloud9:

It would be cool if a city like Tulsa hosted the Olympics. I have Oklahoma a few times because I have relatives who live there and it's very nice state and family friendly. Who knows maybe the IOC will give a smaller American city a chance to host the Olympics.
