In a few days I hope to switch my current reservation to another resort. Will my current reservation have to be cancelled first by the CM? And, if so, is there any risk to this? March is a busy time and I don't want to end up without any reservation at all. Thank you. Sarah

yes. unless you have enough pts to book both reservations at the same time.

And, if so, is there any risk to this?

it's only a small risk but it has happened a couple of times in the past. some have reported that MS can put a hold on the available room...i don't know for certain.

best of luck.

Thank you. Can I ask them to check for availability before they actually make the switch?

Yes but in the window where they cancel first reservation and then go on to book the second reservation like previous poster said there is a small chance that another MS CM could be booking those same dates&resort for another member; again, doesn't happen often but has been known to happen.

Good luck :goodvibes

They can check but you still run the risk of it not being available buy the time the make the new reservation.

We lost 2 reservations this way within the last year. We complained to DVC Management but we were told "that's just the way that the system works". :sad2:

Ok...scary. The good news is that my current reservation is at SSR, and if I should lose it, I'm guessing I wouldn't have a problem getting "back in". Thank you all for your responses.

This is good to know as we may be changing resorts the last 4 nights of our October 2010 trip. :thumbsup2

There can be a risk to doing this. It happened to me in June. We even checked the availability of the room I would be giving up and there were at least 4 available so we thought I would be okay in the 1 minute it would take to cancel and rebook. We were wrong. The good thing is that I got it back the next day but it was a scary thing.

Now, I was told, when trying to make another switch a few days later (you would have thought I learned my lesson) that there are times when they can book the new first as she told me, when I asked about the chance of losing my room again, that "she could book the new room first before letting go of the old one". And she did. Why it happens for some and not others, I don't know.

Just a follow-up: I was able to book a 1 bedroom Lake View at BLT this morning. I called right at 9:00 and boy was I nervous! Thanks again for all the words of wisdom.

We also cancelled our 11 month reservation at BCV for a lake view at BLT in March! I was really nervous until it all went through-glad you got your reservation! :)

Thanks! You, too!

What happens if the resort is not available, can you wait list without any risk of losing your current reservation?

I have a some what related question to the OP's. . .

If you book a Two Bedroom at the 11 month window but later determine that you only need the one bedroom is it possible to just drop the studio from the reservation without risk or do you risk losing the one bedroom when you make the new reservation?

No, you can't just drop the studio portion. The 2 bedroom reservation is canceled and then a new reservation is made for the 1 bedroom. If there isn't availability for the 1 bedroom, you would be out of luck.

If you think that may be a possibility, make a reservation for a 1 bedroom and a studio at 11 months and request that they be near to each other. (Remember that a request is just a request). Then if you have to cancel the studio portion, you can do it without worrying about the 1 bedroom portion. It is more points to do it this way, so you have to consider those extra points as "insurance". Only you know if it would be worth it.
