Switching resorts at 7 months - what do you do if first night is unavailable?

I currently have a reservation at my home resort but would like to switch at 7 months if possible. What is your strategy if the first night is unavailable but the remaining nights are? Are you limited to waitlisting? Or do you keep checking during that day and the next one to see if something comes open? Hoping to think through my strategy and preferences in advance so I don’t get nervous and mess something up in the process.

We switch and waitlist and have never been disappointed (probably more safisticated options other there) but we also play with our dates as needed and consider split stays if they happen

I’m hoping for the best but I think reading these boards is giving me anxiety. Haha! Seems so complicated, especially with walking involved.

Create a wait list ASAP. Get as high up on that WL as you can.
Keep checking.
If day 1 is the only not avail, its the only day you need to open up to get the entire ressie filled

So if you do it this way does it make the reservation for the available days and just wait list the missing day?

You can't make the reservation if the first day is not available. You can try the next day for the remainder.

What if the missing day falls in the middle, will it automatically take the days around the one that is missing?

No, it makes a wait list for the entire stay, but you will be as high as possible on the wait list. If day 2 rolls around and you can get 2 - end, then you can modify your wait list

No, you can only reserve up until the day its blocked

Thanks for the advice. The only time I tried to make a waitlist online it was in my home booking window. I couldn’t figure it out because some of the days were available except for the first night, and I was only interested in switching if I could get the whole timeframe. At the 7 month window, different story.
