Switching Points used?

I have a question...

We're considering an add-on. If we go direct and get 2010 banked points, is it possible to switch out the points used for a July trip so that the July trip uses the banked points and the 2011 points remain? The July trip has been planned since August.

Sorry if this isn't described well - I had trouble articulating!

Yes, that is possible. Matter of fact, when you add on in Disney, they will even allow you to use points from the new contract to replace borrowed points and put the borrowed points back. This is the only time you can "unborrow" points.

You booked at the 11 month window so the points must be from the same resort if you wish to switch out. Otherwise it would be circumventing the home booking priority. If the points are from a different resort then the room you have must be available for booking. If it is then they will use the new points.

Thanks - that helps. It would be the same resort, so that wouldn't be an issue. I didn't realize that they would ever let you "unborrow" - that's good to know.

Does anyone know if you buy another resale contract with current points if you can do any switching or not? I'm guessing that they're a little more agreeable to these modifications if you go direct?

As long as the points are eligible to be swapped MS doesn't care where they come from and I haven't had any problem at all when doing it with a resale purchase.

Direct sales get more of the priority for "un-borrowing" although I've heard of it happening a time or two for resales. Probably not any more though.

Was happy to find this thread, as I am in a very similar situation.

We are also going to add on direct and currently hold a reservation with our 2011 points but want to switch out the points with the 2010 points we will now get with the add on. However I would also like to upgrade the room, if possible. It will be the same resort and since I am past our 11 month window it may not be possible, but would like to give it a try since I will now have more points to use. Will the process work any different to switch out if I am using more points?

As the OP said I hope I stated that properly, sometimes it is difficult to articulate these things.

Thanks.

I just add a new contract and there was 2010 points in it. I have a reservation for fall 2011 and I had to use 85, 2011 points.

Call MS this morning. They banked those 2010 points, then realocated back my 85, 2011 points that I used and they took 85 points from my newly 2010 banked points.

I took 5 minutes to do this !

You can swap them if you could otherwise book that same reservation right now. Be careful about your banking window and ensure that you can still bank those points.

I'm curious about the specifics of this as well.

It sounds like most folks think that you can just switch out those points.

Ken, can you please clarify what you mean by "still available"? ie, It sounds like there would be no difference between cancelling and then rebooking with the 2010 points.....because the room would have to "be available".....

Thanks.

I think what Ken was saying was that if mdsd870 wants to upgrade to another villa the room will have to be available. What I'm not sure about is whether the computer changes allow MS to now grab a new reservation before releasing or canceling the current reservation. In the past it was always a risk that you might lose both reservations because someone else might come in and grab both villas.

Thanks Denlo.

It sounds like if you aren't making any changes to the reservation other than substituting points, then there isn't an issue of 'availability'.

Just want to clarify because we have a reservation booked and we are waiting for ROFR on another contract. Same resort, same use year. We want to switch in the 2010 banked points if we get the contract.

MS can just switch out the points. Normally they'll do so if the new points qualified for the original reservation such as the same home resort points for a reservation made 11 months out or any reservation made after 7 months. They GENERALLY won't just swap out points in such a way you get the home resort advantage with non home resort points, however, there is another way to approach it if that's really what you want. What you do is book any available days with the points you want to use then cancel any corresponding days in the existing 11 month reservation and link everything together. Effectively you have swapped out the points in this situation but it requires availability for some days for the exact reservation type (size, category, etc).
