My daughter(6) got a fever Wed night of 102.7. Took her to the doctors bc it did not go down in the morning and she has a cough that needed to be looked at bc of her allergies. Anyway the pedi(not my normal one) says she has flu like illness and most likely it is the H1N1 type. Says she will get worse and to keep her comfy. She did not get any worse. Today she wakes with no fever at all and just the cough that she needs the neb for. Well my son(3) gets a fever last night. Give him motrin and he wakes this morning with same temp 101.7. Now 2:00pm he has 103.5 fever. Gave him motrin about 5 hours ago so I guess it really did not work for him or it is wearing off. His eyes are puffy and watery. His cough is nasty and all he wants to do is sleep. Is this normal for those who have had swine flu. He has no interest in drinking just sleeping. Any advice. Would you bring him to the ER.
TIA

My DD had suspected H1N1 just this past week, and she was also fever-free on the 3rd day, and then the next day her temp went up to 103. So be prepared for it to come back!

As for your DS, I would continue to treat his symptoms. When you gave him Motrin, did his fever go down? If not, do the alternating Tylenol-Motrin thing -- that works very well when a fever is that high.

Make sure he drinks a lot.

I wouldn't take him to the ER, but if you're really unsure, you should simply call your pediatrician and ask their advice.

Thanks so much for the quick response. I hope her fever stays away. But I will prepare myself. The motrin had no effect on my DS fever. I am going to try the Tylenol-Motrin thing. Thanks again.

The current recommendations are to take your child to the doctor (or call them) for flu like illness. They are supposed to prescribe Tamiflu regardless of a negative Flu Rapid Test if they are under the age of 2 or have a high risk condition (there is a long list of high risk but they include asthma, diabetes, neurological disability or delay).

These are the CDC's list of when to go to the ER:

Get medical care right away if the sick person at home:

* has difficulty breathing or chest pain
* has purple or blue discoloration of the lips
* is vomiting and unable to keep liquids down
* has signs of dehydration such as dizziness when standing, absence of urination, or in infants, a lack of tears when they cry
* has seizures (for example, uncontrolled convulsions)
* is less responsive than normal or becomes confused

I would tell you to trust your instincts - if you feel he needs to be seen, or are worried about his progress at any point of his illness, take him to the doctor. My son had a 102.5 fever the other day - terrible headache and sore throat. Fever did not respond to Motrin. I called our ped's office, and the nurse told me to 'treat the symptoms' - Tylenol, tepid baths, etc. I wanted him seen, but nurse told me it was probably a virus and to give it a day or two. Frustrated, because something just did not feel right to me about his fever - I called a different pediatrician and they said to bring him in right away. Turned out he had a raging case of strep throat. I'm glad I went with my instinct - and now have a new doctor that I trust. Good luck to you - hope your kids are better soon. :flower3:

I feel for you. My DD6 came home from school Wednesday and 2 hours later had a fever of 103.5. Here it is Saturday and she is still having fevers, woke up this morning with one that was 102.5 yet yesterday she woke up and felt great and didn't have any sign of a fever until later in the afternoon.

Thankfully the fever is responding well to Motrin.

I hope your little people get better asap!

Thanks for all the responses. My DS3 woke up about a 1/2 hour ago and his fever is down to 101.7 from the 103 area. He is asking for soup and he did drink a sippy cup full of gatorade. Thanks again.:)
