Just curious, there was some discussion on the podcast about speedos and modesty recently, today I was at pool an AKL and noticed that the teen/tween girls seemed to wear swimsuits which were rather revealing to say the leist but the teen/tween boys all seemed to be wearing long shorts and the bit that surprised me was most of them had the bands from their underwear visible above the shorts... is this common swimwear in the US or was their a convension of odd teens in the pool today?

Totally typical. Looks stupid to me when they wear underwear with swimtrunks, but it's "their" style. As far as the girls go, I had a heck of a time finding an appropriate swimsuit for my daughter this year because she won't wear anything that shows her stomach, but wanted something "girly" and prefers a two-piece just to make bathroom visits easier. We finally found an extra, extra small women's tankini suit that she liked. All the teen suits were either boring sport-style one piece suits or teeny tiny bikinis.

It is common for boys to wear boxers under their swim trunks. Very odd if you ask me and mine don't do that, but I see it a lot. Girls, I feel, are pushed to be sexier and sexier at a younger age-really. Let's just let them be kids.

I want to know why European men feel the need to torture my eyes by wearing a speedo!! :confused3

I don't get the boxers under the swim trunks think either but I can tell you that the girls today don't wear anything different then when I was growing up. The bikinis are pretty much the same thing we wore in middle/high school. I think the difference you are seeing is either that when you were a teen boy you WANTED the girls to wear them so it was ok or you are now a Dad of a girl and you remember what you thought when you were a teenager and saw a girl at the beach in a bikini.

I agree! My DD's have actually been bigger than what I wore at her age.

Yes the guys all wear very long swim suits and shorts, has been that way for several years. Haven't seen a speedo in a long time on anyone but a middle aged/older man Who I REALLY wish I hadn't seen one on!

Agreed. My girls both wear bikinis and I don't find them to be scandalous.

My daughter also wears a bikini and has since the 7th or 8th grade, as do all of her friends. I don't see the big scandal either.

As far as the boy wearing underwear under their swimsuits, that isn't something that I have noticed around here, but maybe they do. My boys don't.

I dont understand the guys that wear underwear with a bathing suit thing. I noticed it at Holiday World's water park the last few years.

Makes no sense to me and neither I or my 10 year old son do it.

DS12 is the only one of his friends who does not werar underwear under/with his swim trunks. You think they would stay wet forever. But he is picky about the inside of his swim trunks.

Kae

DS12 wears boxer briefs under his swim trunks. He likes to wear his trunks and shorts so low on his hips that we make him wear the boxer briefs to keep him from cracka lackin'. The briefs fit tighter on him than the trunks, therefore, it keeps him from giving everyone a show that they might not appreciate.

Maybe you should buy him some swim jammers to wear underneath. ;)

Yes, we have a whole wave of boys who can't seem to understand that heavy cotton underpants are not meant to be worn in swimming pools. They DROOP, which is really not a sexy look -- my DS likes to point out that with all that wet cotton under their trunks, they look like they are carrying a load.

DS has a tendency to go more European, at least in terms of fabric. He joined a team and discovered jammers, and now he much prefers them, though he wears them in a slightly looser size for a bit more modesty.

I don't see today's bikinis as being any more scandalous than in the past. In fact, today's bikini actually covers way more up than when I was a teen.

I was a teen in the 70's, days of the string bikini; little triangles of fabric connected by strings.

I must have been more prudish than my parents back then. They bought me a bikini during one of their trips to the Riviera. I still have it and still have never worn it. The top was slightly larger than two postage stamp size triangles connected with string and the bottom was a triangle in the front and in the back connected by string. There was less fabric than is in a standard dinner napkin. In fact, I could have probably fashioned two of them from a dinner napkin.

So, by 70's standards, the 2010's bikinis are positively prudish in comparison.

As for speedos, my kids swim competitively, so I am used to guys walking around in speedos. My boys don't wear boxers under their trunks, but they do put their jammers on under them. They tell me it is all about the possibility of the trunks falling off.

We were in Cancun several years ago and the group we were with was playing sand volleyball. A couple European men in their Speedo's joined us and lets just say that Speedo's and volleyball are NOT a good combination.
