We are looking at the week between Christmas and New Year's as a surprise trip for our girls. It just hit me that it might be too cold to swim there, so choosing the resort with the best pool may not be critical. Do the pools ever close at WDW? Can you swim in late December/early Jan or is it too cold?

The pools are heated and yes you "can" swim in December. Whether or not you will want to will depend on the weather the week you are there and your personal comfort zone. We were in Orlando at Christmas last year, it was around 80 and we swam every day. BUT, I've read trip reports for a week or two before that where they reported 40 degree temps. Not sure if I would spend a lot more on a better pool at this time of year.

We're taking our first trip to the World at the beginning of Dec. and were wondering the same thing.I'm planning on taking the swimsuits as a just in case. I really don't think we'll have much time for swimming at the pools. (We're only staying 5 days.) But, better to be prepared than have a bunch of disappointed kids. Also, I'm going to try something out this week. I read a tip for using swimmers towels like you see the Olympic athletes use. The tipper said they are inexpensive and don't take up much room in the suitcase. I'll let you know how it goes after we try it out at the local pool this week.

The pools are open and heated as the PP said. I was there in Feb a few years ago and the lifeguards were in long pants, sweatshirts, mittens and knit caps watching their breath and there were people in the pool! The pool is heated but the air is not! Getting out would be my biggest problem.

But if you are from somewhere cold you may think FL is a heat wave and have no problems swimming. While my kids love to swim at the resorts, even they said "no way" to that time of year.

And the Florida weather is very unpredictable and could be quite warm when you are there, or even in the afternoons. Throw the suits in the suitcase and have them just in case!

All of the resorts have towels available for you to use. There is really no reason to bring your own?

Whether you'll swim depends on the weather and your tolerance to cold air when you get out of the pool. My kids have always gone swimming no matter what time of year we go to Florida. (We were in northern Michigan last week and DD13 swam in Lake Michigan on a day that was 60 degrees and windy!)

Thank you for the info. I'm guessing the girls might swim in sub-zero temps, but Mom and Dad - not so much!

We've been in March and November when it was too cool for swimming. The pools may have been heated, but the water or air still felt very cold. There's always the hot tub, unless you stay at a value.

My family went for Christmas/NY of 08, and for the first few days, we had some nice 80 degree whether. Then, for the rest of our trip, we got hit by a cold front and suffered through 40's. Were from PA, so were used to the cold...but not quite swimming whether.

I agree with what others have said...since the pools are heated, its more about your tolerance getting out of the pool than being in it! ;)
