SWAN/DOLPHIN Upgrades Question

I just got off the phone with SPG and I am completely confused...I can get a room with a balcony for $190 or I can get a regular room for $240. They said that if I get the room with the balcony that I will probally not get an upgrade but if I get a regular room then I will probally get upgraded to concierge. PLEASE EXPLAIN.
What are the chances of getting an upgrade at the swan/dolphin?

Sounds like you are taking a big risk expecting an upgrade. I would just pay for what you want. Any upgrade would be an added bonus.

It sounds confusing to me as well. I would recommend going for the balcony room at the lower price. I was told I'd have to pay $30 a night more for a balcony. You might still be able to get club level (concierage) access in a balcony room if you ask at check in. It sounds like they are really charging you for club level and then telling you it's an upgrade. I haven't heard great things about the club level food. We do a grocery stop and bring our own snacks to the room. I would ask what your view is from the balcony room. They might be giving you a lesser view at the lower price although I would think all balconies have pretty good views. You might want to make the reservation with Starwood, and then call Swan or Dolphin to try to get something better.

Some balcony rooms have slightly obstructed views because they are on lower floors with trees/tall shrubs growing in front of the balcony. Just a caution.
