Swan - Bedbugs

There are a LOT of rooms for Disney to inspect. If the shower is not working correctly - they can miss it because the housekeeper did not shower in that room. A light bulb can be out & not recognized - because they don't turn on every light.

BUT - how can a housekeeper make a bed without noticing bedbugs? We always look for signs such as bloody stains on the mattress, etc. How can a housekeeper miss that? :confused3

EXACTLY!!!! It is the responsibility of every hotel not just disney to have rooms/beds thoroughly inspected every day. It is NOT acceptable to find them in your room.....NOT acceptable!!

Do you think housekeeping is given the time to inspect the seams of every mattress in every room? Because that is where you need to look for bedbugs.

Also, as a guest you (in general) have no way of knowing, you could have brought them in with you, via the cargo hold of the airplane you were on. Or in the trunk of the rental car you used. Or the taxi. Housekeeping does not change the sheets every day, it would be easy enough to have transported the little buggers in yourself, and not be aware of it right away.

Bugs happen. Especially in a climate such as the one in Florida. They are not a sign of being unclean. And impossible to keep out. And as long as the stuff that kills them is banned, more and more bedbugs will be found.

If I am stripping a bed, getting it ready for the next guest - I certainly would notice the seams on the mattress. Yes - they have mattress covers. Yes - you can still get to the seams. If there are bedbugs in my bed, I do find fault with housekeeping. Wake up - LOOK at the bed you are making. It just makes sense when we're talking about the bed, not the sink or toilet or shower.

Thank you for passing along the information.

I am happy to hear they are attempting to rectify the situation.

this can happen ANYWHERE. Stop being hysterical. We all know that if you are inclined to be paranoid about this particular problem, it can easily be checked before you ever unpack your suitcase/go to bed.

I am an innkeeper and don't have that problem but it could happen with any guest simply by bringing the bugs in and with them in their luggage, having them at home or "caught" the bugs from a fellow traveler on a train or plane, from a rental car, etc.

Don't bring down the resort in which your friend found the offending critters. It's not fair, because you KNOW that they are taking care of this problem immediately. :thumbsup2

Just got word of the Starwood policy when this occurs, their policy is to:

- Immediately move guests from the affected room **and** two rooms immediately on both sides..
- Guest clothing and luggage is cleaned to spec and checked
- All soft goods in the rooms in questions are bagged, removed and destroyed and replaced, including bedding, curtains, mattress and furniture
- ALL rooms stay out of inventory for about 2 weeks while all this is happening with multiple checks before rooms being restored to service

And Starwood at Disney (as well as Disney resorts), goes well beyond 'eyeball' checks for bedbugs.. they also use specially trained dogs who can smell the presence of bed bugs and those do checks throughout the resort continuously.

That's way better than I might have thought personally. Clearly they do a LOT to monitor this issue.

I'm aware this can happen anywhere and I don't feel I was being 'hysterical'.

My intention was not to bring down any resort, it was to make people aware. I'm sorry you feel that way.

I never imagined what I though as informing others (as I'd like to be informed) as being so problem causing.

Don't think its anything you said but what I said....but I would say it all again, it is not acceptable to find bed bugs in your hotel, if they are there they should be addressed before guests are placed in rooms. I think folks are appreciative of your bringing this matter out so they can be aware and take matters in their own hands by checking out the beds/rooms! I for one thank you!!!

I certainly don't think you were being hysterical. I personally love reading about all the resorts here and that includes the good with the bad.

Based on my own experience, which is considerable, I believe you are dead wrong when you say it is 'inexcusable'. No matter how many times you repeat it.

Just for the record, I am at the Swan now. No bedbugs our three rooms.

Cheers,

Just to try and help clear up a few things i am a hotel gm and have worked at a property where international performers brought bed bugs in with them, and they weren't discovered until another guest complained of fleas. After inspecting the rooms we couldn't find anything until the pest control came in and informed us bed bugs live in the wood head boards so after we took the head boards off the wall we found them. At night they fall off the head boards as they are nocturnal onto the beds and feed. So even when hsk clean the rooms and see the bed they prob will never see them bc they don't have time to inspect behind every head board. So when i stay that's the first place i check in every room i can. Just and fyi for everyone

And you keep assuming that the bed bugs are in the room before the guest arrives. Guests bring them in on thir luggage and that can simply be from coming in contact with other luggage in transit. No hotelier can prevent that.

You also assume that hoteliers don't check their rooms. They do and Disney does and all chains like Starood, Best Western, Marriott all have protocols you must follow to keep your branding.

A hotelier can do the most extensive checks possible but still have the little buggers come in. As long as you rent rooms to people, they will come in with some of your guests. It's just how they travel.

The only thing that's truly unacceptable is if the hotel doesn't respond to the report appropriately. Take some time to learn about the problem, how the bugs get around, and what hotel's really do. The bedbug problem isn't what you are assuming.

Those bedbugs could have just gotten into that room and then there might not be many signs just yet. They can happen anywhere and even Disney hotel rooms have had them. There's only so much a hotel can do.

I make it a point to put all luggage, clothing and shoes up high on tables on racks when we first arrive. I also check the beds carefully. Of course, if you use ME the bags are just put on the floor but even you can only do so much.

Well we are a family who had bed bugs in our Disney hotel not going to say which but my 18 month was bitten first then next day my other 2 kids and myself had the bites didn't even think it was bed bugs but then had it confirmed they live anywhere in the room my husband didn't get bit for some reason and it can take 8 days to show like with us Disney were really helpful
