Do they work you on to another flight as soon as weather gets better or is the whole trip shot and I might as well hop in the car to drive there?

I have never dealt with possible cancellations, and I know I am ten days out so Ernesto won't be a factor, but if another storm comes I want to be prepared.

Heck no! I count on this board for my information. I was asking in general what happens, as I am sure people have had their flights cancelled due to weather, so I preferred to ask what people's experiences have been as opposed to reading fine print and legal jargon.

From the SW site RE Ernesto and MCO:
Southwest Airlines Customers traveling to/from MCO from 2:00 PM ET, Monday, August 28, through the close of business on Thursday, August 31, wanting to alter their travel plans may also rebook in the original class of service or travel standby (within 14 days of their original date of travel between the original city-pairs and in accordance with our accommodation procedures) without paying any additional charge.

Also, Customers holding reservations for a flight that has been cancelled to/from MCO as a result of Ernesto, and who have not traveled, may elect to hold their funds for future travel or request a refund.
